I would assume your friend kept his film in the freezer, and pulled out what he needed when shooting. I would put it back in the freezer and do the same - shooting at box speed when you retrieve a roll. It probably is in excellent condition. My most recent experience was just a few weeks ago with a 120 roll of Kodak Verichrome that had expired in 2003. Storage unknown (it came with a camera I bought) - probably room temp. I googled it, and the ai said to shoot it at 80 (I thought)v - so I did (it is a 125 iso film) - Unfortunately, my eyes aren't so good - so, I checked again after shooting the roll it actually was 50 instead 80. So i just guessed at development, and it came out great.

I'm heartened by the fact your film was 23 years past due and warm at least briefly and still turned out - nice!
Whiplash change of subject, for what ever reason, I'm most intrigued by the pre-Ai 105mm f2.5 lens I got. I took the Linhof lens pics with it and little over hour ago took it outside and shot it wide-open into slightly hazy back-lit scene. I like the results.

105mm Nikkors are all great lenses - I just used my non ai Nikkor-P on a canon 5D mark III yesterday. Since we are in a film forum - here is one frame from The Pentax 6x7 with that 23 year expired Verichrome. I might buy some more expired Verichrome
