p.1 #1 · I Rolled The Dice...And I May Have Lost

I've been out of the hobby for 14 years whilst trying to keep my head above water raising a family, and have been doing JUST FINE w/o photography in my life All that changed with a recent facebook marketplace listing was calling out to me, and for some reason I impulse bought myself mostly back into the hobby.

The seller was a widow selling her late husbands gear, and he appeared to have had himself a lot of fun with photography based on all the gear she listed. We talked for a while as I was giving everything a look, and they actually ran a studio for many years which gave me the impression that the husband would buy and maintain good gear. She had the following : 24-70 2.8G, 70-200 VR1, 85mm 1.4d, 200 Micro, 300 AFS, and 400 2.8 AFS, TC 1.4/1.7/2.0II. I went into the transaction understanding that I couldn't properly test the lenses as I didn't even have a camera body yet, but the seller assured me the lenses were all in excellent condition. For the record I have zero doubt she was knowingly deceiving me with her evaluation of the equipment.

After bringing everything home and giving it a good cleaning, I decided it was better to rent a body before buying to get a feel for what I might want. Fedex dropped my KEH rental D4 off and much to my delight I actually had some time to play between running kids to sports/activities.

First lens up was the 24-70 which did everything it was supposed to, and reminded me just how quickly the good glass focuses. Nice!

Second lens mounted up was the 70-200 2.8 VR1. It seemed to function fine but the zoom ring going from 200 __> 70 feels stiff and in need of attention. I noted it a bit when looking it over, but in the heat of the moment I really didn't think too much of it. Not a huge deal, but I know it will bother me long term.

Third lens to play around with was the 300 f/4 AFS. Focus...focus...HELLO focus. Why won't this thing work....dammit I'm late to go pick up the kids. I proceed to spend the next 45 minutes running scenarios through my head on what might be wrong. Remember it's been 14 years since I picked up a camera. Get back home, clean up the contacts really well....still no dice. It will manual focus fine...but no AFS. hmmm

Now I'm getting a bit nervous that maybe this guy got a fair amount of stuff for really cheap because he didn't mind if it was rough around the edges, or maybe he just liked broken stuff? But that seems odd for someone who ran a professional studio for many years.

I wasn't intending on it, but now I have the overwhelming and urgent feeling to test everything I bought. The wife calls out "suppers ready"....ok just a minute. I was really looking forward to playing with my new toys, but I was overcome with the feeling of regret creeping in. Why do I do this to myself?

Finished up some really good chicken noodle soup, and back outside for testing. 85 1.4d screw drive isn't fast, but it's a beautiful lens that appears to be doing what it should...phew.

Next up is the 200 Micro. This is one lens I've never owned before, and from what I understand it's primarily used in manual mode only so I'm not too concerned, but wouldn't ya know it the sound of the focus running back and forth makes me cringe. It works...but doesn't sound happy.

Ok ok now onto the big boy 400 2.8.....please,please please let this thing play nice. From what little time I spent it seems to be AOK. Some relief.

Ok, now how do I proceed from here. I paid using Venmo, and until this point I was a Venmo virgin, but that is what the seller wanted so that's what I did as you can't argue with a 75yo lady(mistake...no protection, 3.5% fees added for using a credit card, and my credit card company treats it like a cash advance, so another big fee plus instant interest accrual. I'm learning some expensive lessons).

I'm hoping she will just take the lenses back or at least refund the costs to repair them, I'll be happy with either scenario. But my main concern is I'm really regretting getting back into photography, and that IS NOT what I want. Heck, I didn't even get a chance to enjoy the D4 I rented yet due to the lenses causing me so much concern.

TLDR; I rolled the dice on some used lenses and this old dog is learning some potentially expensive lessons. haha Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

I'm curious why the widow didn't have a Nikon body for sale to go along with all those lenses, one you could've used to test the lenses even if you weren't interested in purchasing it.

When you go back to ask for a concession you might see the deceased husband on his new riding mower he bought with the funds from your lens purchases

Your OP was a great read btw.

You should have taken a camera body with you to check out the lenses, read through the Venmo stipulations before making the purchase. Good luck with trying to get a refund or concessions.

I wasn’t in the convo but reading, doubt it was intentional. The 300 AF motor goes bad sitting doing nothing, it basically oxidizes, all motos of that gen are at risk (ask me how I know) Worst thing for that lens is to not be used. Otherwise some older lenses with minor rubs isn’t too bad. Could be a lot worse if you got a bucket of non working lenses. Good luck with the follow up regardless, and ensure you use that glass.

She had sold the camera bodies already. My original plan was to buy a D610 she had for sale as well, and use that to test the lenses. But all the bodies were sold, and that threw me for a loop.

He would be proud of his wife, she got more money out of me then I was hoping for. haha

She had a few camera bodies for sale, and I was planning on buying one along with the lenses. But by the time I had arrived all the bodies were sold so that threw me for a loop. You are right, I should've read through the stipulations, but assumed it was another form of paypal.

I agree that I don't think it was intentional. I just really hope for the best examples so I don't have to worry about blaming the gear for my terrible results. haha

Thanks. That actually makes me genuinely suspicious, whereas my previous suspicion was just in jest. You would think a buyer getting a great deal on those bodies would've also partaken on the lenses, assuming they were offered at the great prices implied in your OP. I'm thinking maybe those who bought the bodies might've tried the lenses you wound up buying and discovered the same issues you did only later, which would imply the window might've observed that and thus learned of the problems.

I was originally leaning against the idea of you asking for a concession or for her to take the lenses back, based on my belief the responsibility was on you to test the lenses and the fact she's a widow. Now I'm not so sure...

I don't buy anything off FB Marketplace. I only do EBay with very experienced sellers with a track record. 9/10 times if it's not a brick and mortar store I don't buy camera gear from them.

In no way is your purchase protected by Venmo, nor is she under any obligation to help you pay to repair things you didn't bother to test, things she has no technical knowledge about. I think you learned your lesson though...just don't make it your personality (yeah I saw your bio).

I don't have any Venom, but used products from individuals are normally sold AS IS, so you need to inspect before finalizing purchase. You can buy used stuff from KEH or MBP with some warranty.

I'm curious why you did not simply proceed to modern Z mount gear? You will end up there anyways, and maybe use a few adapted lenses not in the Z ecosystem.

I don't know how I feel about it. I did state in my purchase offer that I cannot test the lenses and it makes me nervous, and her response was "everything is in very good condition". If she would've said that she had no knowledge of the condition or functionality, then the risk is 100% on me.

14 years ago when I was buying and selling, I would use Nikoncafe, FM, and Craigslist with very few if any issues. So I really didn't think too hard about trusting the seller.

I did get caught up in the moment and excitement of it all, had driven 1.5hrs to see it and got caught a little off guard that there would be no camera to test them with. The old saying "fools rush in" certainly applies. I'm hoping I can cool down and recover from this enough to not look at the gear with spite.

My son was born 2 months early so I needed to sell all my gear to raise funds, and most of what I bought is what I had sold many years back. So it's a bit of trauma or nostalgia I guess...or a mix of both.

In this case yes....I went right up to my neck. Thanks, after I cool down a bit I'm hoping I can come to accept my fate in this transaction.

Fellow mid-westerner here . . .

I've had worse (I've also had better but . . .). Years ago I bought a 300 f4 and the motor died within weeks. The seller responded that it worked fine for him. Also, years ago, I bought an 'Excellent condition' 180 f2.8 AF-D which ended up needing almost as much in repairs as I spent for it. I've bought a 12-24 in 'perfect condition' that was wildly de-centered.

The used marketplace is a crap shoot and everyone has stories. Now you have yours.

You can ask her if you can return it, but good luck with that. The questions are exactly how much did you pay for this, whether it makes any economic sense to get any of them brought up to spec (which I doubt), or whether you should trade them in for whatever you can get and take it as lessoned learned.

If the kids are ok, everything else is immaterial.

The AF-S lenses do seem to need at least somewhat regular use to keep from corroding/dying over time. I would have zero trouble believing that the 300 worked when the previous owner passed and has since stopped working. Racking the manual focus ring a few times can sometimes wake up a flaky AF-S motor. And if the 70-200 shows no outward signs of damage and nothing is grinding, I'd work the ring a bit and see if it just needs to loosen up after potentially several years of not being used.

The 85 f/1.4D and 200 f/4D are both screwdriver lenses. As long as nothing is physically seized, they will autofocus indefinitely. I've not used the 200, but some AF/AF-D lenses just don't sound happy even when things are perfectly fine.

Those are boring. If you’re after an older DSLR, start with something more interesting. A D750 or D850 paired with the 58/1.4G is drool worthy and will never not be incredible.

Hey there neighbor! You are 100% correct... I was just really looking forward to the new adventure and it's not starting off like I had hoped.

I had no idea that era of Nikon AF-S was prone to issues. I guess that's why so many praise the screw drive and MF lenses....use them to pound nails then snap off wall hanging images.

I have a real appreciation for high quality gear regardless of the age. The D750 just doesn't do anything for me...I would be more likely to chase a nice D700 tbh. The D850 does look very interesting though. My MAIN excuse for me getting back into photography is the kids getting more active in sports, so the long end is where I will live for a while.

I have a lot of older AF-S lenses that all work fine. Two of my least used lenses acted up. One showed intermittent autofocus problems and the other focused slowly, making funny noises. Exercising the lenses resolved both issues. I now routinely exercise the autofocus of my AF-S lenses. It is like getting older "use it or lose it."

Anything with an autofocus motor built in is as much a mechanical device as it is an electronic one, and the bigger lenses have some heavy elements to be moving around.

Same deal as @Luke_Miller@, I've had one problem out of several AF-S lenses. Working the focus ring limped it along, but eventually the motor needed to be replaced. The rest are still doing their thing, but I make a point to use them or at least rotate rings every now and then.

The earliest AF-S 300 f/2.8's are 30 years old by now.

I can see where the Venmo/Credit Card cash advance would be frustrating because I had a similar experience within the past few years. After calling the credit card company they told me I had to pay every bit of what I owed on the credit card basically immediately because the "cash advance" would be considered the last thing paid back (they charge daily interest on it) so that wrecked my budget for that month.

Otherwise unless you paid top dollar you're in pretty good shape aside from the 300mm and maybe the 70-200 which you can probably use to trade in for better versions.
