Yesterday evening a summer thunderstorm put on quite a show across the horizon at dusk along the Colorado/Utah border. Definitely a good night to watch the weather from a distance.

Much appreciated Greg! Actually had to pack up and leave a few minutes after this as the strikes were getting scary close!

I believe that's the Mother Ship preparing to land. Nice shots....did you use a lightning trigger?

Haha, that's what it looks like Al! Thank you, no I did not use a lightning trigger. Strikes were so frequent that I just used the interval timer set to go off every second (so no delay between shots) and then used a long 30 second exposure.

I always enjoy your pictures, especially because I know you live in Colorado (as do I) and I'm always trying to figure out where they were taken. Looking at this image I'm thinking you were in some sage country somewhere near Eagle?

Thanks Al, I enjoy your photos too and I often try and guess where yours were taken too! This was not Eagle however which is the area where I live, but instead along the Utah border up on Mack Ridge where the Kokopelli Trail is. Similar high desert Pinyon-Juniper and Sagebrush. Here I was probably about 5-7 miles from the Utah border and the terrain seen behind the lightning is all in Utah for the most part.

Great shot and processing. You say that you used the interval timer, did you composite in post or were all these in one 30 second exposure?

I was going to ask the same thing. There were so many lightning flashes for about 30 seconds!

Thanks Jim, yes I stacked about 6-7 of the best lightning frames in Photoshop using lighten blending mode. Then finished in Luminar. The wind was really blowing hard so even 30 seconds was pushing it. Many of the frames were blurry from the wind gusts.

Thanks Jim, yes I stacked about 6-7 of the best lightning frames in Photoshop using lighten blending mode. Then finished in Luminar. The wind was really blowing hard so even 30 seconds was pushing it. Many of the frames were blurry from the wind gusts.
