Interesting chart John. Do you think you will use your 50 much less if you own the 65/1?
I doubt I would ever buy one, but I don't see using a 50 and a 65. A 35/1.4 would go nicely with a 65/1 as a two lens setup (for people). Damn, now I'm starting to talk myself into buying one.

I'll strongly consider it myself. I think I can take heads and shoulders shots with it just as long as I don't get close to my subject which is what I do @70mm of my 24-70/2.8 lens. I just wonder where the rumor is coming from---is it because Sigma is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year? If it is true, do they release this first or the 85/1.2 ART? I'm interested in that lens too.

There can be a fine line between encroachment, connection or detachment with your subject. Two of my favorite portrait lenses historically have been the Leica 75 Summilux and the Nikkor 58/1.4. In fact I eventually abandoned 85's in favor of the 24-70 zoom; and a lot of the time it ended up in that 60-70 zone, probably because that was a comfortable place to create from, at least for me...

It isn't even real yet and I've already sold myself on it.

You must be the market. I'm not seeing it, but I don't like the modern close portrait stuff. I think the selfie has ruined the human distance cultural perspective.

I'm not seeing anything from the Sigma about any 65/1, which is strange. Was there a development announcement?

I had the Sigma 65/2 and liked it. Mostly I sold it because it wasn't 50mm and wasn't f/1.4. I now own the 50/1.2GM. To me that is like a black hole that eats any potential sales near 50mm. With that lens I can't imagine what I would need in any 65mm lens.

Nicely put. 'Upgrading' the Sony 50/1.2 seems quite unrealistic.

CV65/2 made me realize that I actually prefer this "odd" focal length to classic 50mm...
Let's see what Sigma will have to offer .

I too like the Sigma 65/2 and carry it on my A1ii along with my Leica Q3M for street portraits. My 50/1.4 GM has not been out of the safe since getting this little marvel

Same here! The Sigma 65mm f/2 is the best lens. 65mm is such a sweet spot for portraits, street photography, and everything in between. 65mm is just the perfect focal length!

Love it so much!

Yeah, just like 50mm, 40mm, or 35mm. Oh, wait. Stop. With the Q3 43, we were told that 43mm is the hot new thing.😇

43mm holds no interest for me but I find 28mm and 65 mm work very well together for a small kit. I'm sure a 65/ f1.0 would be a marvel but large and heavy

Indeed, it may be too large and heavy, and undoubtedly bigger than the 50/1.2; which is already too big.

I’ve never been a fan of 50mm. It just never clicked with me. The Nikon 58mm f/1.4G was probably the best of the bunch for me. With 65mm, though, I feel like I’m exactly where I need to be.

At the same time, I’ve never really fallen in love with 85mm either. Never quite understood the appeal. I’ve always preferred 105mm for portraits and the extra compression.

For environmental portraits, I find 24mm and 28mm much more interesting than 35mm, which somehow feels neither wide enough nor long enough to me.

My Sony kit right now is the 24GM and the 65mm f/2. And if Sony ever releases a 105GM, I’ll be buying it on day one.

Regarding 40mm… I totally get the hype. But a lot of it comes down to the execution. Nikon’s 40mm f/2 is just so-so in terms of image quality, while Sony’s 40mm f/2.5 is an absolute joy to use in so many ways.

So it’s not just about the focal length. It’s the whole package. handling, size and weight, image quality, and just how the lens feels in use.
