p.1 #1A7RVI 3rd party lens burst rate restrictions? (<15 fps AF-C and <30 fps manual)
I recently got an A7RVI and noticed that my non-Sony glass seems to have burst fps restrictions beyond what I've seen mentioned. I'm was expecting to see a 15 fps cap in AF-C and no cap (30 fps) in manual, but instead I saw the following:
My Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN does 30 fps in AF-S/MF, and in AF-C 15 fps compressed or 10 fps lossless/HQ. Prior to a firmware update, it behaved like the Viltrox lenses below.
My Viltrox 26mm F2.8 & Viltrox 14mm F5 do 20 fps in AF-S/MF compressed or 10 fps lossless/HQ, and in AF-C 15 fps compressed or 10 fps lossless/HQ.
Can other A7RVI owners verify this behavior / see if this impacts all 3rd party lenses? I asked Sony and didn't hear back. Sigma said 15 fps is expected from the Sony restriction and was unaware of a 10 fps limit. Viltrox said the manual focus fps restriction is expected behavior, which sounds strange to me. I tested an A7V and don't recall seeing this behavior, but it was very brief so I may have missed it.
I was hoping to pick up some additional Tamron / Sigma glass, but I may reconsider if they're capped at 10 fps. I'd be especially interested if anyone with a Sigma 35mm 1.4 ii or a Tamron 20-40mm 2.8 could check!

It’s a Sony thing. 3rd party lenses are limited to 15 frames per second. Sony lenses give you the full 30. 30 is electronic shutter, but 10 max with mechanical shutter IIRC.

I think 10 FPS is limited by the shutter mechanics. It's too bad that Sony does not have a faster shutter unit, but they probably cheaped out and use the same one for many cameras.

Just realized I didn't specify; all of the frame rates specified were measured using an electronic shutter. Just switching the compression quality setting between lossless compressed and compressed changes the frame rate between 10 and 15 FPS with AF-C (and 10 and 20 in manual for the Viltrox lenses).

Not the case for me, my sigma 300-600, viltox 35, 135 and tamron 35-150 all behave as expected
Fairly unscientific but just shot a burst and looked at the timestamps, all were shooting at 15fps
Im assuming you set the shutter to release rather than focus priority so the camera isnt waiting to acquire / confirm focus before firing, that can slow things down regardless of other settings

Thanks for testing it out! I tried switching between AF / Release / Balanced Emphasis but it doesn't seem to impact the result for me (at least during testing on a static subject).
Dumb question, but could you confirm if you are shooting raw in compressed, HQ compressed, or lossless?

I noticed the same discrepancy with my Sigma 28-45 and the a7R VI. I didn't test as thoroughly, but with lossless compressed raw, I was only getting 10 FPS.
FYI, a much easier way to test this is to just use pre-capture set to 1 second. Set the camera to 30fps, and just tap the shutter quickly. You'll get 1-2 photos without the pre-capture icon, and the rest of them with the icon tells you what FPS you're getting.

Did some more testing.
My Viltrox 35mm f/1.2 is also getting 10 fps in AF-C, AF-S, and MF. In AF-C, changing focus during precapture is slow and a little jittery. In MF, the manual focus ring does nothing during precapture, but once you release precapture, whatever change you tried to make suddenly takes effect.
My Laowa 10mm f/2.8 gets 30 fps in AF-C if not focusing. When focusing, it drops to 10 fps, and changing focus is slow. In AF-S, it gets 30 fps. In MF, you get 30 fps, and the manual focus ring is functional during precapture.
My Sigma 28-45 f/1.8 gets 30 fps in AF-C if not focusing. When focusing, it drops to 10 fps, and changing focus during precapture is slow and a little jittery. In AF-S, it gets 30 fps. In MF, you get 30 fps, and the manual focus ring is functional during precapture.
My Sigma 60-600 f/4.5-6.3 gets 30 fps in AF-C if not focusing. When focusing, it drops to 10 fps, and changing focus during precapture is slow and a little jittery. In AF-S, it gets 30 fps. In MF, you get 30 fps, and the manual focus ring is functional during precapture.
As a control, my Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM gets 30 fps in all modes. Changing focus during precapture is a little slow but seems smoother than other lenses. The manual focus ring is functional during precapture.
Not a single lens I tested drops to the claimed 15 fps.

I think the point is, the 'Sony thing' is not 15 fps for the OP in all cases:
"My Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN does 30 fps in AF-S/MF"
