p.1 #1 · SL3 vs SL3-S vs SL3-P - help me choose

So - want to mainly use this to for taking pictures as a complete novice - I am still trying to figure out how to take pictures manually. I wanted to explore different M lenses (specifically the non- leica ones like LLM/Voightlander etc ).
I do want to stick to the SL3 system because the M11 would be too much and with the SL3- after 2-3 years I may be able to recoup 50% of the cost .

My research tells me SL3-P has best autofocus and video and image quality. But I really wanted to confirm with the pros here.
Thanks .

Comes down to what you shoot. The S has the best low light performance. It does have 24mp sensor but for me that is plenty. 24mp means larger and better light gathering. The AF between the S and P is marginal as far as i am concerned. 779 vs 819 focus points; whoop de do.

Either way you will do just fine.

If you want to experience M lenses to shoot manually on an SL mount ... the SL2-S or SL2 is a BARGAIN right now. As to your perspective regarding depreciation, the depreciation curve is pretty much flat from here on out.

As to the MP ... ummm, the SL2 and the SL3-P are pretty much the same. As is the SL3-S and SL2-S.

Specs for:

AF
Video
IQ

The SL3-P can't be the best at all three. Part of the quid pro quo of AF is processing power, and readout speeds vs. lines read per image kind of "geeky" thing. Having faster AF and video means a reduction in readout lines, in order to process quicker. Granted, for most things this will not be a noticeable item. My point though, is that your statement seems / sounds like you're drinking someone's kool-aid more than knowing what it is you truly want as your primary objective.

As to the SL3-P being the best, I'd consider it to being the best at being versatile. I'm not sure I could see it trumping the SL3 in terms of straight out IQ (splittin' hairs, but still).

That said, what are you shooting with now ... and what are you shooting (subject / style). Is it heavy AF speed dependent or normal / routine stuff, etc. Are you wanting this to be your manual lens body because it has IBIS and EVF (or just less $$$ than an M).

That said, ... your point about "complete novice", I'd definitely take a look at an SL2 or SL2-S and your non-Leica M mount, manual lenses as a $$$ friendly entry into the M-mount world. I mean, you can get an SL2-S for $2K (or less) and it works VERY WELL with M lenses. The SL2-S is "only" 24MP ... BUT, here's the thing ... A), depending on your printing sizes, 24MP is still PLENTY enough. and B) if you are new to manual focus, you're gonna find that "Nailing Perfect Focus" with an M mount lens is going to have a Learning Curve to it, and will ALWAYS have some degree of "error" rate, even in your keepers ... unless you are taking the time to punch in and critically focus via magnified EVF ... which is fine, but that isn't what "develops you" in your manual focus journey ... the "misses" do. In that regard, pixel peeping 60MP vs. 24MP ... 24MP will be more satisfying to your imperfect, but still good dof focus.

For that ... I still come back to the SL2-S or SL2. My SL2-S has served me well for a few years with my M lenses alongside my M10R (and some others). Granted, it isn't Sony level AF, but the implementation of M lenses on the SL is good, imo.

Now, if you are wanting the best Phase Detect AF possible in the L mount, then you'll be looking at the SL3 series and bump about $3K MORE to get started.

I don't intend to sound harsh, but it sounds like you haven't figured out what your real needs are ... except that you want to play in the M Mount world ... which is way cool, go for it. I just don't think getting started in the M mount lens world NEEDS an SL3 series body. I mean, for that money, you COULD get an SL2-S ... AND ... an M240 or maybe M10.

Do you have to have 60MP, if so ... you wouldn't be asking about the SL3-S vs. SL3-P. So, if you don't HAVE to have 60MP and want to learn to play with Manual Focus M mount lenses on the SL series, again ... the SL2 or SL2-S are STRONGLY recommended for consideration.

Lots to unpack here.

1) Nothing wrong with going with Leica SL3 or Voigtlander lenses, but both require A LOT from the photographer in order to get the most of of the equipment and generate images that will live up to your expectations. There are certainly easier paths to take to learn the art of photography. Heck, even a Nikon Zf with some Z-mount Voigtlander manual focusing glass might be a good starting place.

2) If your main objective is to take images, then specs for best autofocus or video quality don't matter. If you are a true hybrid shooter and want to do a lot of video, want advanced video features, then your equation changes.

3) 50% value depreciation: buy a used camera today, even used lenses, and most of the loss is already backed in. As a complete novice, there is risk that the hobby doesn't take, or circumstances changes, and they you can always sell the gear for pretty much the same that you paid.

What type of subjects are you planning to photograph? Under what conditions (day or night, rain or shine, summer of snow) Any weight restrictions on the gear? Budget?

Just buy used and you will not suffer much if any loss on Leica gear.

My vote is for buying a used SL3 for the following reasons. My guess is that there is good availability and lower prices due to people trading into the latest SL3-P body. Take advantage of this.

You can mount M lenses and get used to manual focus using an EVF that is a much better system than the Leica EV-1. You will find that achieving reliable focus with this setup is easy and reliable. It will get you into the manual/prime shooting mindset. The perfect preparation for an M system one day.

You can buy a couple of excellent small AF primes say in the 40mm and 28mm range from Sigma, or Panasonic. Because you will have the full 60mpx sensor you will gat a prime shooting experience very close to both of the Leica Q series cameras.

Finally, you can buy a few L-Mount zoom for a great all around mirrorless camera setup. You can build the lens lineup slowly over time as used bargains appear.

With the SL3 and small manual and AF primes you will pay only a small weight/size premium to get very close workflow, results, and shooting experiences to Leicas most famous and popular camera systems. A great base to start from. Basically a survey of all the current main Leica systems in one package. Yes, the new SL3-P will have slightly better AF performance, but the latest version of the SL3 firmware is also very good. The older versions of SL just don't compare in AF performance. I rarely miss a shot because of SL3 AF failure anymore. You will likely not lose the money you would buying a new SL3-P body.

Good luck with any choice you make.
