This guy was patient and posed for me against the moody backdrop of the early morning light at the pond outlet off of Allen's Creek.
I walked around the pond to see if he would get tired of me and bail while I tried to find an interesting angle, but he stuck around drying his wings, so I was able to try some Chiaroscuro lighting, side lighting, etc with different backgrounds for fun.

Really liking that first one Eric ! It's a bit of a different composition but I think it works.

Powerful set of images Eric. That 400-800 produces some beautiful OOF backgrounds with tack sharp subjects, in your hands it's a winner. YGMV
You are too kind Louie, thanks mucho!

What a great set of sharp, clear captures. A perfect lesson that it's not necessary to have a full subject in a frame to make a masterful image.
Thanks, I agree about the cropping, even with people, head and shoulders sometimes are preferred over full length portraits, why not birds? Heh.

Thanks Birdie! They are really interesting to watch, well, I probably feel that way about most things in nature, but these guys really do put on a show.
