p.1 #1 · Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Z-mount vs Mitakon 65mm f/1.4 Fuji GFX Comparison

Good afternoon everyone. I decided to throw this comparison together real quick just in case anyone else was curious about these two lenses. I've been trying to stick with the Z8 over a GFX mainly because I'm tired of multiple lens systems.

This is absolutely NOT a scientific exercise in lens comparison -- if you are expecting Fred Miranda quality, I'm sorry to say you will not find that here. Part of the reason is that I actually decided to do this comparison after the fact. I had already sold my GFX by the time I got the Voigtlander, so these photos were taken on different days, with different (though similar) lighting conditions, and slightly different framing.

I shot both lenses wide open because my primary concern for comparison was depth of field and fall off. This appears to be to the detriment of the Voigtlander in some regard, as I show below. I also cropped the Z8 photo to 4:3 to match the GFX, and resized the zoomed in sections to the same resolution to help with the comparison. I left the photos otherwise unadjusted aside from slight WB adjustments for consistency.

But first, here is the first photo up for comparison.

Fuji GFX100S // Mitakon 65mm f/1.4 @ f/1.4

Nikon Z8 // Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton @ f/1.0

At a cursory first glance, the images appear to be fairly comparable. However, looking a bit closer, it is pretty evident that the Voigtlander is exhibiting significantly busier bokeh when looking at the tree and pine needles on the ground. For a closer comparison:

Finally, I wanted to zoom in to the focus point of the tricycle. In this case, the Mitakon appears to be slightly sharper in the center, though I admit that the Voigtlander's plane of focus may simply be off slightly. The Voigtlander does, however, show significantly more color fringing along areas of high contrast.

The second photo for comparison is this small statue of St. Francis of Assissi, patron saint of animals.

Z8/Voigtlander

This subject was significantly closer to the camera, and the Voigtlander clearly pulls ahead, I presume due in part to the floating elements. The Mitakon is much softer and more glowy, while the Voigtlander continues to exhibit the strong color fringing.

I wanted to exhibit some foreground here. The Voigtlander still provides much busier out of focus areas here than the Mitakon.

Again, this was not intended to be a comprehensive comparison between these two lenses. I had tried to find direct comparisons of these two lenses before buying the Voigtlander, so after buying it (and now planning on returning it in favor of the 50mm 1.2 Nokton) I thought I'd throw this comparison together in the hopes that it might help someone else looking at these two lenses.

If you've had both lenses and have any comparison photos, please feel free to post them!
