A bit over a year ago I gave my Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 to our church media department. At a youth event last week, one gal taking photos caught the camera strap of the Canon R6 on her car mirror and the camera and lens hit the ground from about waist level, falling lens first.
What appears to be the largest front element is just flopping loose inside. It's not the front outer piece of glass but seems to be the next one back, and it's thick and curved. I don't have a clue what else is or could be wrong or broken. The camera works fine.
It's the first generation of the 24-70mm with VC > Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC
It's would fit a forum's selling condition rating of 8+ to 9 before the drop. Apparently this model used in good condition for Canon mount costs between $450 and $700 (B&H).
Is a lens like this worth fixing? Ever had similar repaired and know what the minimum cost would be? If you had a lens like this that dropped and saw the element flopping loose would you just scrap the lens and replace it?
Sounds like the internal ring or tabs that hold this element in place have broken. It would probably cost more to repair, than to replace. If you have a friendly neighbourhood lens repair shop, I'd ask them about it; otherwise, I'd sell it on eBay, with a complete and honest description. Last year, I sold an EF 24-105/4L IS for parts, as it needed a new ribbon cable (third time). I got about $175 US for it.
If you can send it directly to Tamron, they might repair it for a reasonable amount, or offer a refurb unit at a significant discount. Not a bad idea to send them a note.

Agreed. At a minimum they would probably give you an estimate. I doubt they would be willing to give you an estimate over the phone and without seeing it. However, the phone call should be worth a shot. Good luck with it. And, if it is repairable for a reasonable cost, please come back and let us know in case some of us have the same issue in the future.

I found out from Tamron that they will not give an estimate or repair this pre-G2 lens.
But a place in Portland - likely like other repair shops - will give an estimate for a $25 fee and it must be sent to them.
