Looks like a very capable design. There's a lot going on there which shows an understanding of what people are doing with it, high end users in particular and the overall package is well thought out. RRS take note at what is being offered at that price point and wake up!

I received mine today, and like any other Leofoto product, the fit, finish, and machining are top-notch. Leofoto has kept the same proven design as its previous L-brackets. To access the battery compartment, you simply swing open a section of the grip extension, making battery changes quick and convenient. Kudos to Leofoto!

The Sony A7R VI already has a larger, more comfortable grip than previous generations, so I don’t really need additional support for my hand. That said, the extra grip extension provided by this L-bracket makes the camera even more comfortable to hold and, more importantly, gives me a more secure grip.

As an L-bracket, it performs exactly as it should. You might ask, “Why buy an L-bracket when a base plate does essentially the same thing?” Here’s why.

Imagine you’ve mounted your camera on a tripod and carefully composed your shot. Suddenly, you realize the composition would work better in vertical orientation. With an L-bracket, you simply remove the camera from the ball head, rotate it 90 degrees, and remount it using the vertical side of the bracket. The camera stays centered over the tripod, so your composition remains virtually unchanged.

If, instead, you tilt the ball head into the drop notch to shoot vertically, the camera shifts to one side and lower, changing both the camera position and the composition. This difference becomes even more significant when shooting close-up or macro subjects, where even a small shift in camera position can noticeably alter the framing.

For that reason, I personally consider an L-bracket much more valuable than a simple base plate. As a bonus, it also provides some protection for the side of the camera. Some photographers go a step further and use a full camera cage, which offers additional mounting points and protection, although those are generally more beneficial for video shooters than for still photographers.

I totally agree, Joshua. Yes, the L makes it a bit bulky, but for me, it's worth it. Especially in the rare event that I want to shoot a vertical oriented pano with a lens that doesn't have lens collar. I used to have a dedicated RRS pano head but sold it due to the lack of use. The "L" may create kind of a buffer if the camera is dropped too.. But I got to say, among all brands of brackets I have used, RRS ones are the most smooth to hold. The workmanship is one level up, at a steep price of course.

The baseplates have been one level up, for sure, but RRS designers have lost the thread. First with the weird pinky-finger ledge, and now with the open segment where the pinky wants to go. I have RRS plates on my A7ii and Z6, but went with Smallrig for the A1.

I'm interested into this bracket so thanks for the good info above. Does anyone know if the L-bracket (vertical part) can be detached from the base? Thank you!

Yes, the L-section can be removed easily using the included Allen-wrench, making the bracket just like a regular base plate.
