Hoping someone might have an insight into this. I suffer side effects from the PWM (pulse width modulation) used on OLED screens in devices such as iPhone 11 Pro, 12, 13 etc. Literally cause me to become mildly dizzy, nauseous, almost like travel sickness symptoms, not pleasant.

I am trying to find if anyone else who suffers with this has managed to use the Nikon Z8 or Z9 EVF's without any issues. It may be I need to try/hire one for a week to find out the answer, if I cannot tolerate them it means I will have to resort to a D850 for now, until maybe the technology changes and some kind of non OLED viewfinder screen is implemented.

That's an interesting question. I am optically VERY sensitive to a variety of things, but haven't heard of PWM before.

Does this manifest as seeing flicker on screens for you? I assume if so the frequency of the flicker changes as screen brightness changes.

I notice PWM a bit more than some, like with LED lighting and whatnot, but it doesn't generally result in any physical symptoms. I did get headaches from my iPhone 13 screen, though.

Anyway, I've not noticed it at all with a Z EVF. But if you're more sensitive to it, then you probably do just need to rent one and use it in a variety of circumstances.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Z8/Z9 screen changes refresh rates during different operations like the Sonys do, so that's probably a boon for OP.

While the flashing of cheap LED Christmas lights can drive me crazy 😂, I am not sensitive enough to say if the Nikon OLEDs will be an issue for you or not.

Usually, PWM issues are worse at lower brightness levels. To dim OLED screens or LED lights, a technique is used where the light is turned on and off very quickly, so it appears dim to your eye. Generally speaking, the cheaper the device, the fewer blinking cycles there are per second, which makes it more likely for your eye or camera to pick up the blinking. Then, as you decrease brightness, it exacerbates the lower cycles.

So for anyone running into issues with OLED displays or LED lights, I would try upping the brightness. While not ideal in all situations, it's probably offten a better alternative than feeling ill.

Set the refresh rate to 120hz - default is 60hz. Be sure to test while shooting a burst at various rates using AF-C (continuous autofocus) and while panning with a high contrast background.

I think I might suffer from that. I do get headaches/dizziness etc a lot after using screens. Never knew PWM existed, so will look into it

Not sure how I missed these replies, sorry! It is odd because I knew nothing of PWM until I picked up an OLED phone, for me there is no flickering just the effect which follows, in my case feeling slight eye strain/headache symptoms along with vertigo at a mild level initially if I have enough exposure.

Indeed, the brightness level is important, above 80% for phones helps a lot for some, if you get symptoms easily, even 100% can be brutal just for 20-30 seconds believe it or not.

Even on the new iPhone 17 Pro, Apple failed to make it usable for PWM sufferers, even though it has a 'PWM' mode in theory!

Worth doing, I know several friends and family now who did not realise it was a thing for them, all be it at a much lower level than myself and many others.

The harsh "square wave" strobe effect that plunges a smartphone into pitch-black hundreds of times a second is entirely absent here.

FWIW, PWM (pulse width modulation) is used all over the modern digital world. It is simply an easy and efficient way to vary the intensity of a value, such as voltage, which correlates to brightness, by simply turning the signal ON (100%) for a certain unit of time, and OFF (0%), for another unit of time. This is childs play for microprocessors.

For example, say your screen is updated at 120Hz. The inverse of that gives you the period of the waveform, which is about 8.3msec. Say the pixels can only have have two states, ON at 100%, or OFF at 0%. If I turn that pixel ON for 4.15msec and OFF for 4.15msec, the brain will perceive that as 50% brightness. More time ON than OFF gets you brighter, and inverse that for dimmer. If done fast enough, the brain only perceives the average. If done too slow, you might notice flickering, and some point in between, you may not directly perceive the flickering, but something in your subconcious does, which may induce a headache. Direct illumination LEDs can turn cleanly ON and OFF in nanoseconds. Certain LEDs also excite applied phosphors, to change color or quality of light, and those are a bit slower, as the phosphor continues to glow for a bit after the excitation has been removed.

In office settings lit with fluorescents, some perceive a slight flickering. There is a very brief dimming of output when the AC waveform crosses 0V, from either direction. However, the phosphors on the inside of the tube, which are excited to produce ligtht, never full go dark. The time constant on an incandescent filament, which is just a tungsten filiment heated in a vacuum to the point of glowing, is much longer, and even if driven by a square wave, PWN signal, the frequency would have to be quite slow to be noticed by human eyes.

Appreciate the more technical insight, it is useful to see that explained - certainly I have had issues with Philips Hue colour bulbs in the past caused by PWM. Mainly the real side effects/symptoms seem to come from OLED displays used either on mobile phones, more so now tablets and in some cases laptops.

Many report they are unable to use any of these devices now that LED/IPS displays have been dropped. The original Oneplus 3 OLED phone I noticed the issue with was back in 2016. Apple have been well aware of this for 8-9 years now, it took them all that time to release the iPhone17 Pro which has an option for PWM sensitive users, that option turned out to be really of no use in the real world.

At the moment for the Nikon cameras, certainly the Z8 and Z9 with regards the EVF, it is looking more promising. Nobody has really come back reporting any major issues, on a technical level it seems the hardware used should not trigger symptoms. Once I get hands on for a few days I will be able to give some feedback, since I am very sensitive to OLED PWM, the outcome from testing should be a good gauge for the minority who it affects.

An excellent explanation! PWM was also used in older digital devices, such as calculators with segmented LED displays, to reduce power consumption. This was carried over when LCD displays replaced LEDs in such devices.

Just for perspective, no other device in my relatively long life has ever caused me problems until I looked at an OLED phone. So although PWM might have been around for many years, the nature of OLED is unique in the way it triggers symptoms, almost always the individual has never experienced a problem until such a time that a (usually) OLED phone was purchased.

I noticed some mild side effects from some Philips Hue LED bulbs in the past, but we are talking less than 1 out of 10 on a scale compared to 10 out of 10 with OLED phones.

Nonetheless a great explanation as you said, hopefully some day we will get some OLED phones with DC dimming or some other tech comes along, I wouldn't mind a newer phone, my 6 year non OLED is slowing down!

Another thing to consider is the potential for either strain or damage to peoples eyes who do not have any symptoms?!? hopefully not but only time will tell I suspect.

Since you have me curious, I dug a bit deeper.

First, an light emitting diode (LED) emits light, while an liquid crystal display (LCD) either transmits or reflects light. In a monitor, the LCD layer is tranmissive. An IPS panel is actually a LCD layer in front, with a white LED layer behind. There are some extra tricks involved, such as polarizer layers, but that isn't needed for this discussion. The LED layer provides the illumination, and it can be constant across the screen, or have local dimming, but that detail is also not critical for understanding basic operation. The LCD layer is a giant array, of very tiny, electronically controlled shutters. Each color pixel has one Red, Blue, and Green subpixel. Brightness and color are adjusted by controlling the light through each sub-pixel independently. Maximum apparent illumination is when a shutter is completely open.

In an OLED panel, each RGB sub-pixels illuminates, directly emitting whatever light you preceive as an image on the screen. In their off state, no light is emitted, which is how they come up with the term 'infinite contrast,' although we know even a black panel reflects light.

Now for the important part. In moderm IPS panels, the LCD layer is controlled by a continously varying voltage, which controlls the light transmitted from the LED layer. Apparently, lower quality IPS monitors once used PWM control. From what I read, Gray-to-Gray (GtG) response of an IPS panel is in the 1-5ms range. The higher number is for a quality office or media monitor while the lower is for gaming monitors. On the other hand, brightness from OLED sub-pixels is controlled by PWM, and they are extremely fast, 0.03-0.1ms GtG response. From what I understand, PWM control is baked in as part of the technology, and cannot be changed.

So not only do the OLED pixels have a much quicker response, they are also either 100% ON or 0% OFF, with no in between state, in contrast with IPS panels with a analog controlled LCD layer, which can have infinite in-between states. Both speed, and degree of perceived illumination over time, can explain why some experience unwelcome visual effects.

This it the reason DC dimming for OLED is significantly 'safer' for those who suffer with PWM effects. OLED pixels do not just stay in a binary on/off state when controlled with DC dimming. True DC dimming (or Pulse Amplitude Modulation, often called DC-like dimming on phones) varies the actual continuous electrical current or voltage supplied to the organic light-emitting diode. This changes how brightly each individual subpixel glows on a continuous analog scale rather than flashing them on and off.

There are also some hybrid systems in use. Because using full DC dimming can create some challenges with colour accuracy, many device makers only use DC dimming at medium-to-high brightness, switching back to high-frequency PWM only at the lowest brightness steps. This is not ideal but better than full PWM control for brightness.
