You might need to give a bit more info .. what are you shooting? What magnification do you need.

Otherwise it's just as long as can carry/afford etc

1120mm equivalent (400 + 1.4x on m43), so perhaps 600 + 2x on a FF Sony ...

I didn't expect only one reply. I thought more would call me out. The question comes from a Steven Wright comedy act of one liners. He said he had been going crazy trying to get a close up picture of the horizon.

The point being, the closer you try to get, the further the horizon moves away. But he did not know enough about photography and the reach that is possible, like that excellent shot from @mcbroomf above. So the joke is rather flat.

Good thing it was said on the Johnny Carson show, which got laughs and not the BBC.

Seems flat to me too, but I grew up with lots of British humour so I'm used to quality.
Farty Towels, Dad's Army, Some Mothers, Python, Black Adder, Mr Bean, Young Ones, Vicar Dibley, Two Ronnies, Office, Extras, etc It's a very long list.

You can't take a picture of the horizon. The Earth is flat. Therefore there is no horizon.
