But that consistency is exactly why Tamron made it a control ring on the Z mount version. Nikon lenses have a control ring. This preserves that functionality across the lenses for the system, rather than introducing a different paradigm. Most people don't give a flying crap if the layout is consistent between two different camera mounts, because almost no one buys the same lens in two different camera mounts and uses them side by side.

Not sure if it’s consistency with Nikon lenses or some functionality that’s officially missing in Nikon firmware. I remember reading somewhere that the aperture implementation on Chinese Z-Mount lenses is using a workaround, not native functionality. Such an unofficial workaround is likely not an option for Tamron.

My point was rather on consistency within Tamron’s lens lineup. This one being the first of a new design language obviously it won’t be consistent with older lenses, only new releases. But appreciate they might aim for consistency with Nikons lenses given how closely they cooperate.

Tamron having consistency with Nikon's meh control ring paradigm is the last thing I care about as a Nikon shooter. I will always value a REAL aperture ring over a control ring. One of the things I like the most about shooting on the Zf is seeing where my entire exposure triangle is without having the camera on, just like a Fuji.

If Nikon insists on the control ring at all costs, they need to at least standardize on having it click/declickable like the Tamron.

I mean, I prefer a real aperture ring as well to the control ring (which I don't use at all on my Nikon lenses), but I do completely understand why Tamron would want to maintain consistency with Nikon's design language in that way.

I would suspect that Tamron is a bit more hamstrung with design decisions than most due to their shadowy pseudo-OEM-adjacent relationship to Nikon.

Guess it's similar to how Sigma replaced the aperture ring with a Canon style control ring when they made the 17-40 in RF mount.

There was also some difference in controls (as compared to the "base" E-mount) in the Fuji X-mount version of that lens, but I don't remember what that was.

Curious for a few more reviews on this lens to trickle out. I've got got the basics in z mount covered except for wide angle. My initial reaction is that this is pretty close, but not quite. Almost at 6 full years since the 14-24 S f2.8 was released.

I know the moment I bite on a 14-28 S, the II will be announced. I'm not ready to be the reason just yet.
