Tamron is going to announce a new 12-20mm f/2.8 lens for Nikon Z.
When I thought we are waiting for 20-40/2.8 Z version, they giving us ultra wide... :/

How is that different from the Sony E Tamron 12-20/2.8? Is it a derivative?

The last lens on earth that needs an aperture ring

This new design language isn’t it for me.

All lenses need aperture rings!

Yeah new design looks.. cobbled together?

Also feel they’re just rolling out the G2 design and now they need to update everything again over the next 1-2 years? I guess this way you can keep releasing „new“ stuff even if they’re only minor redesigns..

Maybe the two threads (here and in the Sony forum) can be merged and cross posted.

The lens sure looks interesting. The widest native AF zoom for the Z mount as of summer '26?

Nice to have more options and looks like it will be fairly lightweight. I like the design and aperture ring, although I already have the Nikon 14-24 which is wide enough for me and it can take 112mm filters.

I bought a Lawoa 11mm some time ago... and then sold it. It is just too much. You need it when you need it, which for me is <1% of the images I shoot. Not worth lugging it around.

Almost assuredly the same glass in Z mount, like all the Tamron releases to date.

Hm so it’s an aperture ring in the FE mount version but unmarked function ring for Nikon Z. We got the hideous design for nothing, yay! 😄

Well you can declick it and use the ring for some other function.

Not the lens for me (just bought the 16-30/2.8 G2), but even though I prefer the G2 industrial design I appreciate they added additional controls.

Hey look, another Tamron zoom that stinks at the long end. The bokeh too...lord.

Hey, I'll take as many alternatives as possible. Albeit, I dont think I would buy one of these over a used/mint 14-24 2.8

I don't want any aperture on the lens. It's not 1968. Canon and Sony bodies have three dials and even a few Nikons have 3. It would be better to have the zoom closer to the body and the focus ring larger. Reaching all the way forward for MF is not good.

Is the Nikon version $100 more than Sony to pay for the Z mount licensing?

Ignorant comment and not even offering an argument why one should prefer the dial..

It’s much faster to change the aperture from f/8 to wide-open and back on a lens with marked aperture stops. Ideal e.g when you‘re traveling and want to take a spontaneous portrait in-between landscape / architecture pictures.

Also just more fun to use.

And for people like you those lenses always have an „A“ setting so you can fumble away with your beloved rear dial..

On this particular lens, there’s less of an advantage. But it would make sense to have a consistent layout across lenses.

But that consistency is exactly why Tamron made it a control ring on the Z mount version. Nikon lenses have a control ring. This preserves that functionality across the lenses for the system, rather than introducing a different paradigm. Most people don't give a flying crap if the layout is consistent between two different camera mounts, because almost no one buys the same lens in two different camera mounts and uses them side by side.
