p.1 #1 · American Football

Since the USA is out of the World Cup, I thought I'd pull something up from what we call football here. This is a scan from the first pro football game I ever shot, way back in 1978 when I was working for a daily paper. The game was between the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints and the Packers won 28-17. I was shooting with a Nikon F2as (no motor drive) and Nikkor 300mm f2.8 (no autofocus) using Tri-X 400. The Saints player running toward me was Tony Galbraith.

Awesome shot. I remember Galbraith. He was a better running back than the Saints were a team.

Awesome shot Brent! But can you post the EXIF info? Like most things 70's, that was a great era of NFL.

Nice. Given that the crowd appears to be at ground level was this a County Stadium game?

Well. I went and looked up a NFL schedule archive and it does say it was at County Stadium. I miss that venue!

I'm glad you looked it up because I couldn't remember if it was there.

Wow, what a shot...!!! Tack sharp and perfectly composed, considering you are using manual focus,,!

Called me attention the fence separating the chairs and the field, no advertising and so low.

Your work is always an inspiration Brent.

Exif info? Er, uh, let me see now. Nikon F2as, 300mm f2.8 lens at f2.8, shutter speed probably about 1/2000th, Tri-X at 400 ISO processed in D76 at 68 degrees, scanned with OpticFilm 7600i. (Some of this is best guess)

Love that shot! Manually focusing a 300mm f/2.8 on Tri-X is seriously impressive. You nailed the timing and composition.

Thanks very much. I have to admit that the composition was sheer luck. I was just trying to keep the runner focused as he came toward me. When the two defensive players came into the frame perfectly positioned, I just kept clicking. 😁

Terrific action shot. Something like this picture is so much easier to get now, but at that time it was a true miracle.

You used the F2a with HI* neural network chip didn’t you? No wonder it came out so well, you practically cheated.

Nicely done, not only the moment you captured but how you processed it.
