p.1 #1 · RESOLVED: Canon Pro-1100 Pinter Setup and Paper Configuration Questions

UPDATE:

To avoid folks downing time trunk to help solve a problem… that we’ve resolved…

My wife — with little help from me — managed to work out the Canon printer interface stuff and get it working correctly, so we’re good now. (Changing printer brands is like blaming computer or camera brands. A whole lot of your long-developed instincts no longer work and some get in the way… and it takes a while to work past that.)

Thanks for those who offered help.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

We’ve long been Epson printer users here. I have the Epson P-9000 and my wife has been using the P-900. After having issues with her perimeter she bought a Canon Pro-1100.

I can usually help her with set up stuff… on Epson. But I’m currently stumped by some issues with the Canon. I suspect that I could eventually figure these things out, but I’m hoping that someone can point me more directly to answers.

I’ll start with one particular issue.

She prints to some small paper sizes used for card sales. The paper size is not among those that are on the printer by default.

What is the process for entering a custom paper size on the Pro-1100 printer. She’ll be printing out of Lightroom. (That’s the other challenge for me — I print from Photoshop…)

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend watching YT videos by Julieanne Kost and Keith Cooper. Kost has videos on Lightroom (using an Epson, but the LRC settings for paper and print size are valid) while Cooper has video(s?) on the printer.

Thanks, we’ve found a few of those.

I think we may be making progress with some assists from a paper vendor that she uses. I’ve issue seems to be some kind of conflict with Apple’s AirPrint driver. The second one that seems odd to me —. and a little unbelievable after using Epson printers — is that, if I’m understanding this correctly, in order to use non-Canon paper stock and/or custom paper sizes you have to download and install some auxiliary Canon app. Still working on that.

On my Epson printers (currently P9000) I can simply set up custom paper sizes from the print dialogs. That does not seem worthy with the Canon Pro-1100.

I’m just now hearing that it creates problems. As a long (VERY long) time Mac user who prints on big Epson printers, I was surprised.

We’re still wrestling with the issue. Currently she can enter the desired paper size on a dialog that should add it to the list of available sizes, but after she does so it doesn’t appear in the list.

A couple of comments but know that I don't have the Canon Pro-1100, I do have the Canon Pro-1000. As mentioned by another user, I don't think you should be using the AirPrint driver. You want to use Canon's CUPS driver and make sure you have the latest version correctly installed.

You don't need to install the auxiliary app to use 3rd party papers although that is an option and allows you to do some customization/fine tuning for specific 3rd party papers. The 3rd party paper manufacturer should provide you with the settings to use on your Canon printer, i.e. media type and the profile which they would typically provide. Of course you can also generate a customer profile for a 3rd party paper as well.

I will say after using my Canon printer for a number of years that there are quirks/issues using the printer on MacOS (driver compatibility issues with OS updates, Canon application issues, etc.). I have no experience with Epson so can't compare.

I might be able to help a little.

Guessing your pro-1100 is going to work pretty much like my pro-1000. First, you can use ICC profiles just like you would use them on any other printer. You would select the profile, and the corresponding paper type the paper provider suggests you use, in LR, PS, or Canon Professional Print and Layout (PPL). In all case that I have found, what you set in software will override what has been set on the printer. Life may be good.

Canon also has a second type of profile, AM1X, that is essentially an ICC profile + a whatever specific printer settings should be used with that ICC profile. These are loaded directly into the printer with Canon's Media Configuration Tool (MCT). Too be honest, I haven't gone very far down that path.

Also, I never could get a decent print when printing directly from LR, on a Mac. In desperation, I installed Canon's PPL software, which can be used alone, or linked through LR. The same exact files now print perfectly through PPL. My issues may be related to the Airprint issue, but once I found a method for getting great results, I decided it wasn't worth trying to troubleshoot printing directly from LR. As always, your mileage may vary.

I’ll reply to your post, though I’m actually probably replying to others’, too.

Airprint was definitively a problem, and we’ve resolved that issue now. I had not run into it on my Epson P9000 (at least not that I realize…), but it was causing multiple issues with the Pro-1100: the colors were off and more. (Interestingly, my wife also found that it was affecting her older Epson printer, and now a color problem she had with it has evaporated.)

She jumped through hoops to get it to print on a 8.5 x 5.5 card stock that she uses. We were getting close when, by chance, we noticed a little checkbox on a dialog that let her turn off printer margin regulations or some such and voila!

The printer itself seems quite good, but… my god, what an awful software mess itis to get it running for anything but the most basic stuff. (In fairness, few pro printers seem to “just work” right out fo the box, especially there you have to relearn/unlearn some stuff that worked on the prior printer.

Thanks to those who took time to offer ideas on this.

Your issues are with LrC's print module, not the printer. Find a good tutorial on printing from LrC's rather poor print module. I now have user templates set up for all my printing that work well.
Julianne Kost has a few tutorials in her Youtube channel that would be a good starting point.

That makes me feel a little better, although I wasn't certain I could lay my issues against the LRC print module, AirPrint, or something else. Simultaneuos to moving from an eon of PS and LRC on Windows, to trying to do the same on a Mac Studio, I was setting up my Pro-1000.

I have years of darkroom experience, and some marginally successful years with dye ink printers, in addition to having my digital work printed by various services. I have a decent idea of what a good print looks like, and what various printers and media are capable of. My first efforts with the Pro-1000 made my heart drop with how bad they were. After slowing down, I followed the great advice from Keith Cooper of printing known good, reference prints, on basic Canon papers. They were still subpar. Again, for some reason on another, everything worked fantastic from the Canon Professional Print and Layout software. I'm certainly not in love with the interface, but I'm willing to roll with it due to the results.

There is nothing "plug and play" about making great prints from home.

My reply was meant to address the OP's issue with getting prints laid out properly.
I agree that making great prints is not "plug and play". LrC's print module is not well designed to make it easy to get the print layout you want or to get the printer driver setup correctly. The problem you describe may be the common problem of double profiling, which LrC's print module makes an easy error to commit. I agree that PPL is a much better solution for printing from LrC. Glad to hear you are getting the superb results the printer is capable of producing.

She is now putting with complete success out of LR and very happy with the results.

One weird Canon gotcha that she had to work out was how the printer refers to custom print sizes generically. The second issue was one obscure little setting (check box) that had to be selected in order to make prints on her custom paper size with very small margins.

If I understand her correctly, the print does some sort of self profiling, and after doing that the color is now excellent.

Again, defeating AirPrint was one important step.

With Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software, you can install custom sizes. At the top of the Paper Size drop-down box, there is an option to Specify Custom Size. Click that, and a pop-up box labeled “Custom Paper Size” will appear. Click Add, name your custom size, enter the measurements, click OK, then highlight your results, click Add, then OK. That’s it. Note: this won’t migrate to the printer, so you have to use the software for it to be effective.

I've not yet watched all of this LRC Print video but he is running an example using the Canon Pro 1100 and so far is a well crafted how-to video. He seems to be using recent LRC as it was only just published. He says there will be a part 2 going into advanced use.

Yes, we’ve done that. And we figured out that you have to select that generic other-sizes setting… which threw me for a loop as a long-time Epson printer user, where there’s nothing quite like that. (I simply put a paper of a given size in the printer, choose that size in the print dialogs of Photoshop…)

TY

As per my revised original post, we've resolved the issues now.
