"Leica is rumored to announce a new M11-R camera later this year or in early 2027. I was told that the M11-R will have a new sensor but still at 60MP (the last M10-R had a higher-resolution sensor than the M10 version – the general perception was that R stood for “resolution”). Some of the other changes we may see in the M11-R include a larger LCD screen, which could lead to a different button/controls placement or even their complete elimination (all touchscreen-based). "
"My understanding is that the Leica M11-R will use a next-gen or similar sensor that we may see in the M12. The M11-R could be a very good financial deal, just as the M10-R (now listed at $6,835.95) was compared to the M11 ($10,400). It seems that the M11-R will be an experiment/test of what the Leica M12 could be"
p.1 #3 · Leica M11-R 60MP sensor rumor. Makes sense?
The timing is curious because the next generation M is currently scheduled for release around February 2027.
The naming is interesting. I know that there are copyright issues regarding the M12 name. Maybe the M11R name solves for that with the next generation M.
The sensor rumor makes sense as the in house designed Leica sensor is still years away. So, I expect a continuation of a Sony sensor in the next generation M.
I certainly hope we don't lose the physical buttons and only have a touch screen interface. I hate touch screen interfaces. A better rear screen is always welcome as I do sometimes use it to confirm focus and composition. But, a bigger size is not so compelling that I would give up buttons or even upgrade for it.

It sure doesn’t look like they are going to take any risks. Some technical changes to the sensor as well a better quality screen on the rear. Seems to be pretty standard Leica. Not a bad thing either. Just an observation.

So what could a new sensor of the same resolution offer as meaningful improvements worthy of upgrading for?
Obviously some improvement in dynamic range. But this will be incremental and not relevant in the majority of situations. Not enough to upgrade for.
Layered cell architecture for lower noise.
I think faster sensor speed would likely be the number one improvement, and is available in Sony’s latest 60mp sensor.
Faster boot times?
Useful electronic shutter without artifacts.
Silent shooting.
Better LED lighting flicker management.
EFCS mechanical shutter.
Higher frame rates.
Faster shutter speed to freeze action and shoot wider f/stop in bright light.
More PDAF points for advanced focus aids.
What else?
A lot can be done with a more advanced sensor....Show more →
Lots of goodies in that list ... I'd be happy with shutter blades from the M10R to meter off of (retaining the Live View option for matrix metering, too, since many folks prefer matrix). Anything else is gravy, I reckon.

What would be cool is if they offered a digital M3 or M-A.
Monochrome, 60mp sensor, no screen, no light meter. Just an ISO dial, the shutter speed dial and aperture dial from whatever lens you are using.
Or, for those not brave enough to handle the truth - you can't handle the truth - a real digital MP or M6. So as above, but with a buiilt in light meter but only manual mode. No AE, not Auto ISO, no nuffink.

It would make way more sense just to plop the new Sony 67mp sensor in there. I wonder if something was lost in translation from one source to the next — mistaking “still in the 60mp range” for exactly 60mp. Or maybe someone from the GFX marketing team got hired over at Leica, the same person that called a slightly modified version of the 100S sensor a “new sensor” when it went into the 100 II.
In any case, they either need to add EFCS or go back to the previous shutter blade metering. That mechanical stapler shutter sound from the M11 is cringeworthy, even if I did learn to live with it.

Problem is a “new” 60mp sensor from Sony doesn’t exist as far as we know, right? They just have the new 67mp sensor in the A7R VI. No way Sony makes a completely new 60mp sensor just for Leica when the 67mp one is already sitting right there on the shelves.

The sensor in the Sony A7RIV is thought to be available to other camera companies to sell in January 2027. Interesting timing, and is a bit faster that I would have expected. But the A&RVI is not Sony's flagship, so maybe.
I would not hold the rumor to exactly 60mp. 66 mp is probably close enough in resolution for rumors right now. What is concerning is that since Sony will absolutely not sell Leica or anyone else their processor whether Leica can get the Fujitsu processor up handle the speed. I have been directly told by people in a position to know for sure that processor issues is what has held up the M12 (now maybe M11R) camera.
I have no specific information on what exactly the sensor will be however.

I find it hard to believe that the market would give up the much better performance in metering and other things for a prefered shutter sound.
I would prefer no shutter sound and just a minute vibration that provides shutter feedback only for the photographer.

Model lineup would get confusing. Curious if it finally gets the (faster) Maestro IV processor of Q3/SL3 vs. the current Maestro III processor of EV1/M11//SL2.
