p.1 #1 · X100VI observations

I've had this camera for a month. The accessories that I bought was an extra OEM battery and EOM charger plus a wrist strap.

What drew me to this camera and likely what gives Fujifilm its popularity, in my view, are the film simulations. That and the website Fujifilm Weekly.

I have been enamored with the film simulations that are native to the X100VI. I have added several custom Kodak film recipes that are available on the aforementioned website.

As a long time Canon SLR and Kodak film user from the late 70s it is nice to be able to produce images that are as humanly close the original Kodak color negatives and reversal film as possible.

My first SLR was a Minolta SRT 101 and I couldn't wait to shoot a roll or two Kodachrome 64. I took them to my neighborhood film processor and waited the one week turn around. Oddly enough I still have a shoe box of images from those days.

I have compared them to what this camera produces and I dare say its darn close.

Maybe someone who is smarter than the rest of us can use AI to help fine tune the recipe so that it mimics the original Kodachrome 64 one for one. I'd like to see that for Kodachrome 25 as well as the older Kodak B&W negatives. I recall my Dad using Kodak Panatomic-X in his Kodak Retina film camera that he bought while stationed in Germany. Dad loved that film for its sharpness.

Anyway back to the camera. Since I am a long time Canon user I relied heavily on videos to show me basic operations and use. I found other video that was most helpful in creating and adding custom film recipes. There is a learning curve but don't sweat it. Watching the videos a couple of times and you'll be as fast making the settings as you are with your other cameras.

My only suggestion to this camera would be to change the LCD screen to be fully articulating so that I can turn the screen facing the camera body. Outside of that I love this little camera.

Battery consumption is nominal in that I don't use the LCD screen and I don't use the EVF. I use it like a old school rangefinder camera. I use a light meter or my EOS R camera to meter than adjust the X100VI accordingly.

As for the fixed lens I have relearned the art of using my feet to help compose an image. Its not really such a terrible thing. I might be easily convinced to use this full time and If I do then I might see my stable of Canon products slowly dwindle.

We'll see.
