Meyer Optik Gorlitz 42mm f/1.2 lens for Leica M-mount specifications:
⦿ 42mm f/1.2
⦿ 10 elements total, 2 asph elements, 2 floating elements
⦿ 15 red aperture blades (the red aperture blades have no influence on picture quality or color)
⦿ The lens will be available for Sony E, Canon RF, and Leica M Mount
⦿ Handmade in Hamburg, Germany
⦿ With rangefinder coupling.
⦿ Weight: 420g.
⦿ Diameter: 60mm
⦿ Length: 60mm (without hood)
⦿ Close focusing distance: 0.7m
⦿ The lens is currently in the market validation phase before final production release
⦿ The first production batch is expected to be small, because the manufacturing capacity in Hamburg is limited, and each lens requires careful assembly and adjustment
I kind of like the barrel design, it's something different. Aperture blades are a bit too 'out there' for me. Part of what I like about the M-system is that the design - while very nice - is quite understated. Not sure how coloured aperture blades fit into that for the general M-user.
Very curious to see some sample images and I'm curious if they will adapt the lens to the different sensor glass thicknesses of the available mounts.
I am a big fan of the original/vintage MOG lenses…just loaded with character. Given the scandal from a few years ago, what I would want to understand is whether this or other new offerings provide distinctive rendering or whether they are just lining up as an intermediate price point between Leica branded lenses and the plethora of cheap-ish (price) knock offs that have sprung up in the last two years.
Optically, I am worried about shooting into the sun with red aperture blades. Black or dark gray blades help hide effects of scattered light, or they at least do not shift the colors of the scattered light. Red blades seem an unnecessary risk for some kind of silly bling vibe.
I’m curious, the optical formula screams modern rendering or flat boring as I like to call it but it’s Meyer Optik so you never know.
The red blades are a beautiful gimmick, the barrel design in not uninteresting but even if the execution leans toward some kind of industrial look, it could use some refining, making the markings red should be obvious, little details. I always liked how Zeiss made the blue dot for their Leica lenses, so classy.
I'm interested in seeing if this is the lens that starts to shift public perception of the brand. And I will happily live vicariously through others using it. No interest in ownership.
Agreed the aperture ring would look better without that 'bold' knurling.
I prefer silver lenses (have a silver camera) so the black doesn't appeal to me.
The aperture blades can be whatever colour they like, however the moment they show any undesirable effect on image quality the lens is a 100% do-not-buy and untouchable imo. Reviewers will look to provoke those effects so MOG need to be cautious.
The 620g also puts me off. This lens would have to noticeably outperform the 40/1.2 Nokton across all important metrics to justify that ridiculous weight in an M lens.
