p.1 #1 · Bought a Sony A7cii, does a grip help cause this is the worst camera for ergonomics.
Anyone here have a grip on the a7cii camera to help with holding it? After buying a Nikon Z30 for my nephew I fell in love with the size of a small camera and smaller lenses..finally decided to get a sony for the autofocus, but it is the worst camera I've ever had when it comes to holding it. My 50s ii + Mitakon 65 didn't cause this type of hand strain. 10 minutes and my hands are killing me today as they were yesterday.
Maybe I'll get used to it but has anyone had this problem and did getting a grip help? The lens I had is light too, its the sony 50mm f2.5g lens. One of the reasons I got rid of my Fuji 50s ii was being tired of the weight of it, but I never thought that this camera would be much worse. Same goes for ergonomics with the buttons. Maybe I just need to get used to it since it's all new to me, but right off the bat it wasn't like the Fuji where everything made sense with the buttons and even the Nikon z30 is better.
Kinda wondering if I made a mistake buying this or if I just need to give it more time. I would have bought a Z30 for myself but the autofocus is what turned me off from buying it for myself.
On the positive side I do like that the sony has somewhat of this surreal/dreamy effect look which I never got with the Fuji/Canon/Nikon. So thats cool.
I have both but tend to use the Smallrig plate more, mainly because it has the Arca type tripod mount built in. The Sony one is probably more ergonomic and comfortable though.

I think this is an individual issue. I and others find the size fine and a real advantage, but Sony does make a grip extender for people who find it too small.
It might help you to put a hand strap (not a wrist strap) on the camera. This would support your grip and let you relax your hand.

Damn, I want that too! Where can you activate it? Why did I overlook that the whole time?

I have the same problem with all Sony cameras except the latest one. My understanding Sony changed a7r6 grip a bit, and it does not cause as much strain as previous models. One of the suggestions is to get a bottom plate to create a resting place for a pinky. I use L plates on all my cameras, and I am waiting for somebody to make one for a7r6 soon. I have high hopes it will resolve the issue completely.

Awesome thanks! I'll check them out, yeah I wanted to get some feedback first just to see if people had the same issue and the grip helped. Feels like if they made it 1 inch longer on the grip it would have been a huge help.

I had the a7Cii, and bought the a7R grip privately, but it still didn't help. I found the camera too cramp, buttons to close, and it wasn't comfortable to use with my larger hands (not huge hands). I'm back to using normal sized Sonys.

Not sure why you have to act like an asshole cause the images have a look to them at times? But ok.
I would strongly urge you to maintain your composure and, instead of hurling expletives around, to answer serious and legitimate questions.

That's what I'm afraid of. I was hoping that maybe in a week or two I'd get more used to them, but this has been the only camera I've had where I've hated the button layout. My gut reaction to using the camera is exactly what you mentioned. The Nikon z30 is the same size, feels like half the weight and I have zero issues with grip and button layouts.
I really wanted a small portable camera, especially with the rangefinder style. I'm going to stick with it for a couple of months and I'm hoping to get used to it. If not maybe I'll be able to find another small camera in the future.

Dood, I know you were trying to make fun of me. What does your ego want to show everyone just how smart you are with photography? What will make you feel better? Did my use of using dreamy and surreal to describe some of the images get to you that much?

Calm down, you nutcase. I’d be happy to know how to create a surreal, dreamy look right in the camera without a lot of post-processing effort. Since your photos have that look, I’d just like to find out how it’s achieved. I didn't think that would be so hard to grasp.

On top of the button layout (and lack of buttons/customize options compared to a regular Sony), I found the EVF pretty much useless for my eyes and needs, thus I reverted to composing via the back LCD. After a while, I realized that wasn't my favorite shooting style. I got a Nikon Z6 III for a while, but back to Sony with the a7V. Happy camper.
p.1 #14 · Bought a Sony A7cii, does a grip help cause this is the worst camera for ergonomics.
The grip does in fact help, but I think throwing one on the A7Cii defeats one of the primary advantages of the body.
The A7Cii sacrifices various things (full mechanical shutter, joystick, grip size, etc) to keep its size down to what it is, which is smaller than most other FF ILC bodies. Personally, it’s why I have other larger Sony bodies for when it’s needed. When I’m shooting large telephoto lenses and/or need the best ergo, I actually reach for the Canon R5ii or Fuji X-H2 over all of my Sony bodies. Horses for courses as they say.

Dood, you're a troll that gets all defensive once they are called out. You know theres no surreal/dreamy activation on the camera that you asked about. You acted like an asshole and you cry as soon as someone gives you back the same treatment. People like you are so tiring, you act like the smart ass troll that people hate being around, then you make the other person seem like a jerk for defending themselves.

Hi Joey,
I don’t have an A7CII but an A6700 which should be similar in size. I bought an extender from Small Rig which made the handling ideal. Regarding ‘dreamy’ photos, I believe that because I got the same in a side lit/back lit images from the Sigma 28-105/2.8 ART with A7V.

Sony definitely has horrible ergos if you have large hands. It feels like they are 200-300g heavier than they are.
Get whatever grips or A-S plates you can to help. I have several Smallrigs that allow use of the 5th digit. Otherwise the small finger is in a terrible place rubbing under the hard edge of the camera bottom.

The 6700's a little smaller, but it has a more reasonable grip, in my opinion, making it easier to hold.

Yeap, I knew that getting into this. I’ve seen other people mention how bad the ergonomics were. But the Nikon z30 feels great in my hands, loved the size and portability and I was hoping the smaller grip wouldn’t make that much of a difference but I guess it does. I was really hoping not to get a rig cause now it just adds to the bulkiness but I guess I have no choice. I really can’t believe how much my right hand hurts from holding that camera when I’ve held stuff that are much heavier and bigger.
Even with the button layout, I’m also hoping that once I get used to it that will change but yeah like you said and I mentioned before, it just feels awkwardly placed, nothing feels right. But I’m going to keep it through the summer, see how it goes. I just want this autofocus. Maybe theres another small camera like this? I don’t even care about asp-c or full frame, just as long as it’s not a 4/3 camera.
