I am not familiar with bird imaging, but happened to go to Ulva Island recently while travelling the southern Island of New Zealand. This place is famous for its many endemic birds. Since I only had an 18mm landscape lens with me, this was mostly just a walking and watching experience (now I get why nature/wildlife photographers carry these huge lenses around).
One exception was this Stewart Island Robin which came so close I managed to take a few shots. They are curious by nature and have no predators to fear on the island.
