p.1 #1 · Confused about Sigma lens profiles and DPP4

I have recently moved away from DSLR to Canon R10/R100. I am considering the purchase of a Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC for my R10. Every review mentions barrel distortion that REQUIRE correction. I am using DPP4, since Adobe decided I can't use the Lightroom (v6) I paid for. I have tried using the distortion correction in DPP4 on my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 dc dn; it apparently does VERY little. I downloaded a raw photo made with the R7/15mm f/1.4. It does have noticeable distortion. Again, I tried distortion correction with DPP4, and again it does almost nothing, even at the extreme slider positions. The barrel distortion in my 30mm is noticeable, but not annoying. In the 15mm it is obvious and distracting. Is there a way to correct barrel distortion for the 15mm in DPP4?

I don't know that lens, but DPP typically sees only Canon lens profiles unless the lens is impersonating a Canon lens that is similar enough. With all the different computational corrections nowadays it's probably not likely.

Thanks. I get that. Sigma does provide correction profiles that can be used by Photoshop, PSE, and other programs. I can make the (close enough) corrections in Elements 2021, but PSE 2021 cannot open R10/R100 raw files, so I am left converting to JPG, then correcting the JPG. Elements 2026 can utilize the Sigma profiles, but I'm not renting software from Adobe.

The whole mess my take the Sigma 15mm off the table for me. The obvious alternative is the RF16mm f/2.8, which is by definition, not f/1.4. Was kinda hoping I could use the faster lens.

I have mostly moved to DXO PhotoLab for RAW conversion since it has excellent noise reduction. There is a pay once option. Most lenses/camera profiles are covered and you check online.

Have you tried an Adobe Bridge --> ACR workflow? Then save the file as TIFF, or if you're still enamored with Adobe, DNG? The expectation is that you'd still be able to apply the appropriate lens profiles in ACR without requiring PS.

Caveat: I subscribe to the Photographers Bundle so I have both Bridge and ACR available...I don't know if those products are available individually..

My R7 and R62 have lens correction profiles in the FW. You can toggle distortion and light falloff settings and even convert RAW in-camera if you wish. Once converted to JPEG, the correction settings are baked in the file. Maybe the R50/100 does also? I stopped using DPP4—a bug prevented downloading new lens profiles and adjustments were painfully slow even on a M4 Mac Studio—so I gave up. Besides LR and DXO, Apple Photos for Mac has correction profiles and is free for Mac users.

I have installed the 30-day free trial of PL9. So far, that is my best option. As soon as I opened raw files, it downloaded/installed profiles for the camera in use and the lens attached. The instant distortion fixes are nothing short of amazing. I have a long way to go to get used to the software, but distortion correction is what I need for the Sigma lenses. I will keep working with PL9... for 29 more days. Thanks.

I have all but given up anything Adobe. I think the biggest problem is my refusal to rent their software. I am using PSE 2021. Even with ACR updates, the program is completely unable to open raw files from: 90D, R100, R10. I can correct distortion only if I open DPP4, do my thing and generate JPG, then use PSE to make the corrections, then save another version of the JPG. DNG won't open raw files from 90D, R100, R10 either. Which makes it a bit less than useless.

I am OK w/DPP4 as long as i am using Canon lenses. I am used to it. It ain't LR, but it works, mostly. Except for the 3rd party lens thing.

Both the R100 and R10 have menu options for Peripheral Illumination Correct, distortion, and DLO for Canon lenses. Neither camera has Distortion Correction available for my Sigma 30. I've downloaded R7 raw files made with the Sigma 15mm f/1.4. DPP4 cannot correct distortions. PL9 does. Perhaps I'll have to migrate to PL9. It can't be as cumbersome as DPP4.

Tom, I feel and agree with your pain. I have had to make the same choices but decided to purchase the CC subscription. The plusses outweighed the pain.

I'm sure the DXO PL9 along with other competitors would probably do a do a better job at translating my several Canon body images and Fuji GFX100RF files than Adobe's profiles. I've learned semi-automated ways to work around that by generating other profiles to bypass Adobe's As it happens I work in Lightroom and its Develop module interface with ACR. And even if I send the file to PS for further work, the adjustments are made in RAW layers so my work is generally all in ACR.

I elected to stay with LR for its Library features. I use keywording extensively. LR makes that easy. With its catalog, I can search my entire portfolio for an image.

And, I've found LR's Publish module greatly facilitates publishing to Flickr. I wouldn't want to do without that.

I'm sure you'll enjoy DXO PL9. I'm jealous.
