- when continuous tracking AF is engaged the EVF image can show stutter and lag when panning (looks choppy).
- the stutter is worst when raw quality is set to lossless and less pronounced when the raw quality is set to lossy
not sure if this caused by some random setting or if it is universal behavior
to test this
1-mount a 100mm or longer lens,
2-set the EVF frame rate to HIGH
3-set the EVF quality to high under Finder/Monitor
4-set your camera to continuous AF, choose any AF pattern (for e.g. zone)
5- set RAW quality to to lossless compressed
first pan without AF (do not half press shutter if that's how engage AF/AE) the EVF image is smooth while panning
then half press shutter to lock AF on something and the pan around. the stutter / choppy image should be quite visible
go to step 5 and set RAW quality to lossy compressed --> now it should be better
the rear screen does not show this issue so could be some EVF limitation in this camera or a bug
"When performing continuous shooting in the RAW format, setting [RAW File Type] to [Compressed] will make the display in the viewfinder/monitor smoother."
This is likely from the lower sensor fps available for LV / EVF when shooting at the slower readout speeds of 14-bits. As to why it's only perceptible in the EVF, I'm guessing maybe it's higher base frame rate.

The issue I am describing is not during continuous shooting so nothing to do with this.

Check you have pre-capture turned off.
that is it, it's the pre-capture buffering that is causing the issue. I don't know if it is a bug or real limitation of the camera, I contacted Sony Pro. Will share their feedback. the A1 II does not have this issue
of course I need to have pre-capture ON for certain sitautions and this can turn it into a dealbreaker

Could you possibly try the same setup and methodology but with pre-capture OFF and shooting in continuous mode with the shutter held-down acquiring images and see if you observe the same EVF stutter as with pre-capture ON? Perhaps the camera employs the same full image processing pipeline for pre-capture as it does for continuous shooting, with the only difference being whether the images are stored to media. If so, Sony might need to expand the EVF warning to include the pre-capture case as well.
before digging more into it I am waiting for Sony to get back about this... after all I paid $4500 for this camera and user is not supposed to debug / root cause the bugs!

I'll put money on the fact that it is 'within specification'.
A1ii and A9iii have EVF glitches with pre-capture on so no surprise this one does too - at least in the 240p mode which is the only mode I use.
Pre-capture itself works fine but the evf stuttering 'gets in the way' when you don't need pre-capture so best only turn it on when it is really required.
