I worry less about obvious major damage to cameras and lenses than I do about more subtle and hard-to-spot degradation of sensitive alignments. When a camera or lens is jostled and bounced without adequate protection over days and many hours of transportation, there can be subtle misalignments of optical elements, autofocus motors & settings, and sensor and IBIS mechanisms that will degrade performance without causing an outright malfunction. Some of what is attributed to copy variation may in fact be packaging variation.
B&H is at fault for poor packaging. So has been Amazon, though I notice that Amazon lately is doing much better with protecting the books they sell.
When I sell gear, I go to a lot of extra trouble to pack it with maximum protection. My experience is that B&H does not do the same.
I have a friend who had their phone camera permanently lose its autofocus and stabilization when they used it as their bike GPS mounted to their bike just doing city rides, so this is definitely a fear of mine as well. Always a little worried when I open up a package and some of the air pillows are already deflated. Either they did their job in protecting your item or you know it potentially went for a wild ride.

I have also received marginally packed outer boxes. But double boxing is a plus. I don't worship the factory boxes and marginal cosmetic box damage is acceptable to me. The factory box is designed to accept damage and protect the contents except is extreme situations.Adding a second box doesn't magnify the force - it creates a force that otherwise wouldn't exist, ie the Sony box wouldn't move in the scenario I described when shipped by itself without an outer box.

Uh, no.
Can you help me understand why you believe it is incorrect?
