Well, my MicroSync wireless trigger system has finally given up. And since I only need this tool very rarely (USCG unit photos every 2 years), I don't want to spend a bunch of money. I tried using my Canon Speedlight to trigger my Alien Bees, but this only worked when testing, not during the actual photos to be used.

So, I'd appreciate suggestions for a low-cost replacement. I need reliability, but not durability since it won't get used many times before I die someday.

Since optical trigger wasn't effective - I assume because it was outdoors - and you say "Alien Bees" (plural) that puts you back to wireless triggering and simple triggering (not trigger/controller).

Any simple trigger system who's receiver will jack into the Alien Bee will do.

Buff's own system is the CST3 transmitter and CyberSync AC Powered Receiver, reasonably priced and no batteries required. The CST3 is rechargeable and the CyberSync takes juice from the AC line. I have found this system to be reliable.

Then there's the PocketWizard PlusX - more expensive but long range and proven reliable.

Then there is the classic Yongnuo RF603 II, which is inexpensive and reasonbly reliable.

Thank you. It's funny because I put some Godox in my Amazon basket, but held off on completing the purchase. Right before your reply showed up, my wife asked if I wanted what the Godox included in an order she was placing. I said yes. So that is what I'm getting. Turns out a full-time photographer friend of my has gone 100% Godox and is happy. So I'm going to keep my order as-is.

But I do thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this.
