p.1 #1 · Cosina Voigtländer ended production of VM Type 1 28mm lenses, 90/2.8 and Z APS-C lenses

Today Cosina Voigtländer announced end of production of following lenses:

- Nokton 28/1.5 Type I VM (Black and Silver)
- Color-Skopar 28/2.8 Type I VM (Black & Silver)
- Apo-Skopar 90/2.8 VM (Black & Silver)

And all 3 Z-mount APS-C lenses:
 ・NOKTON D23mm F1.2 Aspherical
 ・NOKTON D35mm F1.2
 ・MACRO APO-ULTRON D35mm F2

Type II versions of 28/1.5 and 28/2.8 remain in production.

Looks like a typical / periodical slimming down of their active lineup. I guess 90/2.8 went away since 90/4 APO-Lanthar is on the way (not yet officially announced and release date still unknown but probably coming in the next few months) and otherwise they are reducing available versions of VMs.

For Nikon Z I guess they are going to stick with FF lenses only as they didn't release so much in APS-C to start with and nothing new in the last couple of years.

Weird about the 28mm Nokton, I remembered the lighter type I were more in demand as Mapcamera always out of stock every now and then but not the type II.

I would have also guessed that they'd rather keep Type I of 28/1.5 in production as the more standard / lighter version. Not sure why they chose to go the other way around...

Too bad about the 90mm/2.8: it is a gem.

Perhaps they plan to update the chrome hood bayonet to black, same as the f/1.2 Nokton series ?

Both Type I and Type II have those in silver, so I don't think they would just discontinue Type I in order to re-release it again with a slightly modified new version while keeping Type II in production without any changes. Usually Cosina doesn't keep multiple build versions of same lens in production for very long term. I think it's more likely that they are just reducing different versions and leaving one version in production for long term like they usually do, but it's still a bit of a mystery.

With Color-Skopar 28/2.8 keeping Type II in production was quite an obvious choice since it has been constantly selling better and comes with a few advantages. With 28/1.5 I always though that Type II was more of a collectors edition, with higher launch price and with some special features (like the attachable focusing stick, and heavier brass build). Not the most typical option to be kept going.

Currently the 28/1.5 VM Type I (Black and Silver both) are priced at 115200 yen and Type II (Black & Silver both) are 104890 yen as new at Map. Interesting as official Cosina prices are 125K (Type I) and 140K (Type II). Normally that would imply that Type I has been selling better and doesn't need to be discounted so much. I've also noticed earlier that Type I was having higher street prices.

In my view the Nokton D23mm F1.2 and Macro APO-Ultron D35mm F2, are the two only essential lenses if you own a Z fc. They are the reason I kept the Zfc after getting the Zf.

It is a bit of a mystery why they discontinued the 28 f/1.5 VM Version I instead of the Version II, but it does spread the weight and aperture better between the three 28's they are now making. You now have the 28 f/2.8 at 106g, the 28 f/2 APO at 265g, and the 28 f/1.5 at 330g. I suppose some might also say that making the 28 f/1.5 the brass version does make it feel (and perhaps look if you like the black paint version) a bit more premium and 330g for an f/1.5 lens is still pretty light. I think Fred prefers the brass version if I recall correctly.

p.1 #9 · Cosina Voigtländer ended production of VM Type 1 28mm lenses, 90/2.8 and Z APS-C lenses

I ended up with both the 28mm f/1.5 Nokton Type I (silver aluminum) and Type II (black paint on brass). It's the only duplicate lens I've ever owned, just because I love this lens so much.

The black paint version is gorgeous, and I really enjoy its solid brass tactile feel. But, the Type I has become my most used version lately, especially on my Safari body, because it feels noticeably lighter and has a more contemporary barrel design.

Like past discontinuations, we don't know all the reasons behind Cosina's decision. It's hard to imagine them discontinuing a blockbuster seller, but sales may be only one factor. In the case of Type I and II lenses, there may be other reasons behind which barrel designs they choose to keep or retire.

Gotta keep Fred happy I considered the black paint 28/1.5 as well, but for now I went with the Ultron.

I used to have 28/1.5 VM Type I (Black) but I traded it away after getting the E-mount version. Also used to have 90/2.8 (Black) but I traded it away since it didn't get much use. I also have Sigma 90/2.8 for E-mount that focuses down to 0.5m, so there was less use for the adapted 90/2.8. As for 28/2.8, I still have the Type II version (Black) that wasn't discontinued and it's my favorite from all of Cosina's VM mount 28mm lenses and sufficiently smaller and different from the E-mount versions of 28/1.5 and 28/2 APO.

I have the 3 APS-C lenses in X-mount still (and X-mount versions are not discontinued) although I replaced the standard 23/1.2 with a limited Map Camera anniversary version that is SC and has a different build.

p.1 #12 · Cosina Voigtländer ended production of VM Type 1 28mm lenses, 90/2.8 and Z APS-C lenses

At one point, Cosina probably had too many 28mm options in the lineup. As far as I can tell, the current offerings are the CV 28mm f/1.5 Nokton Type II (black and silver), the CV 28mm f/2.8 Color-Skopar Type II (black and silver), and the CV 28mm f/2 APO-Lanthar (black).

So there are still three unique choices: the 28mm f/1.5 for speed, the 28mm f/2 APO for maximum correction and image quality, and the 28mm f/2.8 for those who prioritize compact size.

The Type I versions have all been discontinued, along with the entire 28mm f/2 Ultron lineup.
