It will be a fine EDC walk around option. For discreet travel scenarios, I doubt anything better exists in this FL region. I wonder who does their glass, do they have a Chinese Schott outfit?
Rhetorical question, I'll look into it. Very soon no one will remember what is was like in pre-Viltrox days. They have been around as a lens producer for just eight years..
With an a7r3, the 7Artisans 40mm f2.5 is 30 grams lighter than the Viltrox 26, and in my case more of a sweet spot as a focal length to start off with, others going into a small sling bag or pack.
I can see the value of the 26, and yet I already have the Sony 28; it seems likely to be easier for processing of evening sunsets for example, in view of comparative vignetting when stopped down. In the bag it only adds 70 grams more than the Viltrox 26, and it hardly gets used.
I also have the Samyang 24 1.8, very sharp, and in the bag it is only 100 grams heavier than the Viltrox. Also hardly used.
Also, the Viltrox 28 4.5, which seems to implicate the outer limit of tolerance for brightness up the middle, also hardly used.
Right now, if not the 7Artisans 40, the go to is the Voigtlander 21mm f3.5 or the Viltrox Evo 85.
I figure the Sony 28 is actually good, and therefore as of now, I'm not likely to buy the 26. Anything missing in this analysis?
Seems fine for your use case? I think like Scott said this is really for someone who really needs that thin-pancake lens form factor. If the optics i decent like their recent offering it should work well for that purpose for not a lot of money(I signed up for the Viltrox mailing list on their site and its 10% off too).
I got notified that its shipping and should be here tomorrow. I'll post some comparison on its sizing on a A5100. This seems like its about the same or similar size as Sony's own 20mm f2.8 APSC lens. Which is my thinnest lens that actually works(the 28mm chip as noted, does not, that was a Viltrox too, so who knows maybe this won't also)...From a pure focal length perspective I don't really have the need on my FF kit having 28mm CV and 24GM book ending the range. So I am purely getting this to use as a 39mm on a APSC smallest Sony body thats not a NEX....
