I will be in Chicago the first week of July fora convention and will be staying at the Marriott Marquis Chicago. I am trying to get some time to be able to capture some images from this city during my stay. Let me know of some locations I should try to get to near this location, I will be mostly be on foot. One image I am hoping to capture is a shot I believe is taken from a parking garage of the "L" coming thru buildings on a S curve, best location for this shot?
Also are tripods allowed generally on the city walks?
I would highly recommend the architecture boat tour! You'll get some great waterfront chances. I've done it multiple times, it's beautiful. Make sure to bring at least a 70mm lens though.
For views on the Chicago River, a shorter and simpler option is the Chicago Water Taxi. You just walk up to one stop (e.g. Michigan Avenue) and then get off at Madison, or go all the way to Chinatown. There are various riverside walks to take in the scene. Also walk under the El in downtown (called the Loop) for some classic vibes. Even after decades of renovation and gentrification, there is plenty of old stuff to shoot in every direction from downtown.
I believe tripods require a "professional" license, but who's going to check? This is Chicago. You can always find a way to prop your camera on a railing or whatever. A beanbag might actually server better.
Might be a good idea to call for a photo meetup with FM locals. There are several of us around ( @airfrogusmc, @Coltrane, etc).
And count me in as well. I'm retired, so most days are available. We could select an area of the city that would provide the most photo opportunities within a reasonable walking distance.
