Interesting tidbit from David Imel’s hands on write up:

“I tested this mode pretty extensively during my time with the camera, and half the time the would freeze up, forcing me to take the battery out and put it back in, and the other half of the time it would store the images but the screen would be black and unusable for multiple seconds. There's a long delay while it moves the data from the buffer to storage, but nothing on screen tells you that's happening or how long it'll take.”

I’ve had Q3s freeze up on me a bunch. I hear

I’ve had a Q3, Q3 43, M11M and two separate M11P’s. Probably have between 70-80K shots between them, can count the freezes/issues in total on one hand….maybe two. I’d say my cameras have frozen MAYBE 5 times in total where I needed to take the battery out, I had major issue with shutter on M11M replaced under warranty. Don’t know if that is more than what I would have had with Sony/Nikon/Canon

I have been using Panasonic L-mount bodies as my primary system for the past 5 years, and have yet to experience a freeze up. I have only had the S1Rii for about a year, but it has provided the same trouble-free performance. While all of this is just anecdotal I suspect that the Leica bodies are more prone to freeze-ups.

That's definitely a real advantage if someone is adapting, and in my experience it holds up. Aside from Leica M bodies, the SL offers the second-best compatibility with M lenses.

Has anyone done a review with M lenses on an S1RII? Now that it seems obvious that the same sensor is being used in the SL3-P. And wouldn't the Leica SL lenses look different on a Lumix S body due to a different sensor stack, or are the native L lenses in general impervious to the thickness of the sensor stack?

What does this camera bring that other brands can’t? Great menus and some great, but large/heavy glass, will mount with adapters ‘M’ glass.. and what else? It appears to me that it is about the glass, but other manufacturers also have some great glass and serve other niche such as sports, BIF and macro photography. So, why do you buy an SL? Is it because you already own lenses? I’m guessing that is your familiarity with the shooting experience. This is why I shoot ‘M’ cameras..

I buy because I like the Leica SL system very much. I am now on my second SL camera and might end up with the SL3-P at some point too.

40ms is still very slow. It needs to be down in the teens or lower to be competitive with Canikony options.

"Just below 40ms" according to Jordan, but also 40ms performance is a big step for Leica/Panasonic. IMO makes me think they have a good chance to "get there" with the next gen SL system, perhaps one of the SL4 models. From the outside looking in, seems the SL3-P brings some other nice feature enhancements as well. BTW, video specs look to be much better than was rumored. But again, with no hands on experience...yet, I can only react to the specs and the Youtuber presentations.

I would like to like it but to do so, I would need a smaller, lighter camera with Nikon level MF focus aids.

Same here. A smaller, lighter body with focus confirmation for shooting R and M lenses, 1 or 2 native L-mount lenses, ideally something like the APO Summicron-SL 35mm but also a lighter version 2, and ideally 60MP so that I get a reasonable MP file out of my Leica APS-C lenses as well.

We now have three SL models in one generation-I think that's a first for the SL system. Also, clearly Leica is very aware that some want a small, smaller SL camera body and lenses as we see by their SL downsizing actions these last few years. Personally, I wouldn't rule out a smaller SL camera body at some point as the SL system continues to progress. I mean, who could have believed Leica would offer an M-EV1 just a few short years ago?

Personally, I feel a small SL camera body variant would be welcome and sell relatively well.

To be quite honest, I think I’ll be moving on and stop hoping for a SL option for my M lenses. Both Nikon and Canon serve(d) me well with M lenses and the cameras are otherwise more capable and cheaper than the SL series. The only thing nicer that I’d pay a bit extra on the Leicas would be their menu system. The SL lenses I would never buy because I don’t see what I’m paying the thousands extra for.

And honestly I’m getting a bit fed up with the pricing. Fine on the M, fine on the somewhat unique Q but nonsense on the SL.

Exactly. Why wait around for a system to maybe one day give you what you want when those features are already available even at a lower cost from others brands for years now.

As a wildlife photographer, I am curious about how this camera will perform with the Sigma 300-600mm f/4 lens. I like the SL UI, and the Sigma zoom is a compelling option for safaris and short walks. At this point, the zoom was introduced in the L-Mount without a real wildlife photography capable body. Of course, one could buy a Sony A1 (i or ii), but you are limited to 10 fps w/ the Sony - Sigma relationship.

The slow(ish) read speed of the SL3-P sensor wouldn't be a deal breaker unless one specialized in birds in flight. Most non-flight wildlife photos are not contingent on the fastest sensor, though I will freely admit that it is a pleasure to shoot wildlife with the Nikon Z9 because of the black-out free viewing.

I'm sure someone will pair these two things together. I'd be more than happy to let Leica invite me to use their new camera for wildlife photography... but that's not going to happen

I had to hard restart the Q3 43 5x in the 4 days I rented it last month alone. The app that people rave about also connected to my camera when it wanted to. I found it way less impressive than Hassleblad Phocus Mobile app. I like the menus, but I definitely think stability can be improved. I've never had my A7r bodies freeze up on me.

Funnily enough, my X2D II will occasionally require a battery removal reset as well. Something about these cameras with ambitious UX systems and stability woes.

I'm interested in the SL line mainly due to build quality. I like the finish and feel of the models, and that Leica actually submits their gear for proper IP certification. I've seen people literally hose these things down and they work fine. Impressive build quality.

I'm less convinced by the optical supremacy of the SL lenses.

I do not understand why cameras do not have a manual option to switch to 12-bit, rather than only during high-speed shooting. 12-bit mode doubles the readout speed with negligible impact on DR.

Nikon D850, 14 vs 12 bits PDR:

It may use the same sensor, but Leica appears to use a different sensor stack thickness to improve compatibility with M lenses. I'm pretty sure they would keep that stack consistent across all SL cameras.
