I love 35's. I recognize the 35 Summilux FLE's are superb. But I still believe the Distagon is superior. Regardless of size.

I just stumbled onto a great deal for a Summilux 35mm FLE, and I’ll admit, it was tempting. Really tempting. But before pulling the trigger, I took the Distagon out for a walk today and snapped a few frames around good ole Battleground. That was all it took to remind me why I love this lens and will never find a replacement for it.

That is always a good approach to prevent spending a lot of money on lenses. Just go out and take pictures with the lenses you have. 👍

If you are not bothered by the size and weight, there certainly isn't any reason to change + spend more money.

Reminds me of a saying/sentence I once heard from Naval Ravikant (founder of AngelList, and more)

"Not wanting something is as good as having it."

Size and weight is a non issue for me. It's bigger than fle but do I care? It's still a small lens anyway you look at it. I think people put too much into this. If one wants to really see where size and weight is noticeable, look no further than a 50 noctilux compared to a summilux.

I have so many 35mm lenses and the Distagon is by far my most favorite lens that I rarely use. Your image certainly provides the motivation to use this lens.

Ive had several 35mm Leica lenses the FLE had two versions...35mm not for me I prefer a 40mm lens and a 28mm combo as the 35mm doesn't cut it. 1. not wide enough 2. Dont like it for portraits.

For size and weight to be a non issue, I assume you are not using the lens on an M body.

I have this lens but basically never use it because it intrudes way too much into the VF of my Ms. Blocks over a 1/4 to 1/3 of the 35mm frame which kills the experience for me.
Fantastic optically though.

99% use on the m11. The size doesn't bother me or keep me from using it. I understand some people have issues with the size but I don't. I use it because it simply renders the best images on an m from a 35.

Exactly, love the rendering, but the size and viewfinder blockage is just too much for me.

I will always be an advocate for the Distagon. The results ARE worth the bother.

I have smaller 35mm lenses, if I need to use them, either for compactness, or for their different rendering, usually the latter. A hefty lens, within reason, acts as my perfect "add-on accessory grip." Perhaps it is because I am left-handed. Perhaps it is because I prioritized supporting the lens and camera with my left hand, while using long telephoto lens, for birds and wildlife, while moving about in their habitats, for several years, before I started using Leica M cameras. ("Long Lens Technique.") By now, in my mid-sixties, my right thumb and wrist have not aged well, because I throw right-handed, and have used large tools right-handed, when the task involved my whole arm and shoulder.

I started Leica M shooting with my Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, which is not small, for an M lens, and weighs about the same as the Distagon.

My Distagon M is smaller and lighter than my ZF.2 and ZE Otus and APO Sonnar SLR lenses.

As for viewfinder blockage, well, perhaps three-plus decades of police handgun and shotgun training conditioned me to obscuring much of target/adversary, with the weapon, from the perspective of the dominant eye, at the time of the shot. The trick is to let the non-dominant eye track the action, and for the "mind's eye," which is the brain, to put it all together.

I am not claiming to be an expert, who knows THE way. This my way, humbly submitted.

Perhaps it is worth the expense of buying an EV-1, or SL-3 just to be able to comfortably use this lens. I would have to add some form of case, grip extension to the EV-1, but it would make this lens well worth using.

The 35 ZM Distagon is also my keeper after using many 35mm lens across Nikon and Leica mount. For me, this lens has the unique combination of great image quality and internal focus. I do not mind the size as well and it balances very well on my Z9 body. The slightly heavy but still smooth manual focus feeling makes it a joy to use every time. It is such a great lens!

Does anyone here use the 35 1.4 ZM on a newer Sony A7 body? How does it work on the thicker filterstack? Does it still show its magic here (contrast, sharpness, micro contrast, colors)?

It is bad on the edges with field curvature and induced astigmatism.

I first had PCX lenses made which greatly helped, then had my A7RII modified to have an identical total glass stack (1.1mm) as the Leica digital M bodies. The final mod gave the best improvement.

Sounds good.
Maybe if I end up getting a new Sony. Then I could see myself having my trusty a7R III converted 🤔

Or maybe I’ll treat myself to an SL for my M lenses first…

I have used it pretty extensively on a modded a7r2 with its BSI sensor. No AA filter at 42mp and native IQ—the ZM is blistering even WO across most the frame. Not absolute cream of the crop for technical IQ like when it came out, but still very near the top in terms of micro contrast and acuity. It has modern Zeiss colors which is a fantastic thing. No color caste issues or anything I have seen.

The white balance will be affected if you use Kolari. I opted for NKIR cause the color caste is far less.

If you are going to shoot m glass, I agree with Thrice—it’s the best solution by far. I have used PCX filters too.

And my Contax G 21/2.8 benefits from stacking PCX filters and a modded sensor but that is unusual.
