I was in Walgreens store a few days ago and as I was waiting to check out the woman ahead of me ordered a pack of Marlboros. It cost $11.43. That's for s pack, not a carton. I couldn't believe it.
Great shot of the VW bus. I was just behind one yesterday.

Brent
I get my gas at a "High'" convienence store Brent and the "ciggies" are outrageous, yet people still smoke and buy them. "Vapping" seems to be the younger generations "nicotene" habit now. Just look for the "mushroom" cloud coming out of the car's window!
I had a 1972 VW bus/camper I bought just before I left military service. I LOVED it!
This model, very early, was in pristine condition!
Thanks!

Smoked Luckies when I was in the service ages ago. I recall that they were about $2/carton at the post PX.
Cancer used to be really cheap.
..I shouldn't laugh Paul because my younger sister died of lung cancer in 2001. She was a heavy smoker!
I never smoked but while in SE Asia, I took a carton with me on operations. That bought us intelligence and friendship.
Thanks!
Dan
Thank you lazlo!
I was out "shooting" and had just finished talking to "Mary B" of the "Junk Yard", and looked down and there it was!!!!
WE used to have giant billboards around here with "Joe Camel" on them..then the "cigarette downfall" hit, as well as, the "NO" billboards" and he was gone!

I'm not sure the "kids these days" (!) have any idea how *ubiquitous" cigarette butts were up through the '70's... I mean if you looked down on the street ANYWHERE in the downtown of any small town to large city they were everywhere! While life in the 2020's has its own unique issues, there's no denying that the world is a vastly cleaner place than it was 30-50 years ago.
Nice treatment of the VW microbus. Looks pristine!!
I still play Alice's Restaurant every Thanksgiving for the family, whether they want to hear it or not
This thread brought back another train of "thought"...
Do you ever have photographic regrets?
I passed the iconic billboard of the Marlboro Man on I-94 outside Detroit probably 100 times in the 1990's. Always thought, every time I passed, that I really should pull over, despite the traffic, and get a shot for the days when no one would believe these cigarette signs existed. I never did, and never got the photo as the billboard disappeared I think in the mid-90's.
(The irony now is, you can't drive 10 miles on a Michigan highway without a billboard ad for a weed dispensary, even though tobacco ads have been illegal for nigh on 30 years...)

Dan, both great shots but the camel pack is a wall hanger for sure. Love the gritty texture.. great job.
Appreciate your comment Michael! The "grit" is actually macadam with a pebble top. Hence the "grit"! Worked perfect here!!
Good luck on your show Michael...Might you take some photos for us that cannot attend?

No they dont "pc"! There still does exist "places" where "ciggie butts" disfigure the ground but nowhere near what is was like in the olde daze!
Thanks!

YES!! But I was to young to realize that...I was born in Iowa and lived there for 10 wonderful years and my father would deliver medical supplies and medicines to rural doctors in Iowa and Minnesota on Fridays.
The Burma Shave signs that dotted the Iowa corn fields were great!
We do have "Mail Pouch" ads painted on barns here and other "stuff".
Thanks!
Dan
On closer inspection I realized the Camel pack pictured is the box and might be the filtered cigarette, but Uncle Dom smoked the soft pack well before filters were available and like all WWII Navy veterans they were held in the sleeve of his T-shirt.
I quit smoking 21 years ago and have been chasing young ladies in spin class ever since.
Dan, nice shot of the VW Bus. I was driving behind a slightly newer version with the water cooled 4 cylinder engine on a trip through Quebec. The owners had swapped in a Subaru RS 2.5 Liter engine. That's 182 HP.
When working in France I smoked filter-less Gitane. For years after that, each time I returned to Paris I recognized the Gitane smell mixed with the Diesel fumes.
