p.1 #1 · Best ef lenses to adapt onto the m6 mark ii?

Hello, I figured id finally post here to figure something out. I recently have been able to free up some money to get lenses for my m6 mark ii, and ive been wondering what lenses work best on the ef to efm adapter. Im sure this has been asked a billion times before so if someone could point me towards a thread that covers it id greatly appreciate it.

Welcome aboard. First, what are you going to shoot? Landscapes, BIF, portraits, wildlife? Find that out first then go from there

I had the M6ii until I sold it earlier this year to focus on FF. I used it with EF 50/1.4, 100/2.8, 70-300L, 100-400 Lii as well as EF-S 15-85, 18-55, 18-135, 55-250 and others. All these adapted lenses worked flawlessly with the Canon EF to EF-M adapter; I tend to think that all EF and EF-S lenses do.

So technically, I cannot say that some of them works better adapted than others. One could also understand your question such as to which EF lenses are most suitable for the M6ii.

My personal favorite in this respect was the EF-S 55-250, which gives very nice telephoto reach with a compact form factor. There is no equivalent in the EF-M program. I also liked the EF-S 18-135 on the M6ii, due to its IQ and versatility. A combo I also used frequently was the M6ii + 100-400 Lii + 2xB extender. Including the crop factor this reaches up to a FL of 1280 mm. And given the ample resolution of the M6ii sensor, one can still crop more. For short and medium FL, on the other hand, the EF-M lens program tends to have more suitable offers for the M6ii.

EF and EF-S lenses all work perfectly on any Canon M-series body using the EF-M mount adapter. They perform like native lenses because they are (in terms of lens to camera protocols).

But the M-system has some excellent native glass that I would probably choose over any adapted EF or EF-S lens:

- EF-M 22mm f/2
- EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro
- EF-M 32mm f/1.4
- EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6

The Sigma prime lens trio in native M-mount (16mm / 30mm / 56mm) is also worth considering.

Canon M lenses in particular are better matched to the bodies in terms of size, which is one reason people chose M-series cameras. Once you start adapting, you throw compactness out the window.

If you are adapting from the EF-S side of things, the 24mm f/2.8 pancake, 35mm f/2.8 Macro and 60mm f/2.8 Macro are all excellent. The 17-55 f/2.8 IS and the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 zooms are also very good, though they will seem bulky.

For a longer zoom, I preferred the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM (latest version) to the EF-M 55-200 f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.

Broadly speaking, all EF lenses that are good choices on Canon APS-C DSLRs can be adapted to work as well or better on your M6 Mark II. Choosing from among them will depend on what you like to shoot.

One specialized accessory that I owned for my M6 Mark II is the Metabones Speed Booster Ultra:

https://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPEF-EFM-BT1

This works like a tele-extender in reverse, allowing a full frame lens to work "normally" on the smaller, APS-C sensor. So, for example, a 50mm full frame lens mounted to the Speed Booster has a 56mm effective focal length (50 * 0.71 * 1.6), rather than 80mm (50 * 1.6). I used this successfully with my EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

I’ll echo what others have said..
All canon lenses, whether EF or EF-s work seamlessly with all M bodies.
The M system was canons biggest seller before being sidelined to make way for the RF system.

You have a superb camera there, you can fit the dinky 22mm native EF-m lens or you can go full blast with EVF, Grip, EF-EFM adapter and mount ANY canon lens (except RF).

My favourite was the EF 70-300ISii nano. Focus speed and accuracy was/is unbelievable.

Good luck with whichever you choose 👍🏻

Hello again to everyone who responded, I dont have enough post history to individually respond to everyone sadly.

I do appreciate the effort you've all put in to responding to my question with such nuanced answers, and I guess ill probably be looking into a ef telephoto pretty soon when my financials clear up more, but first thing first, going off of what I can realistically afford, ill probably get either the sigma 30mm f1.4 efm or (preferably) the canon ef m 32mm f1.4.

I tend to do closer subjects up to macro shots within a reasonable reach, and I use the camera for mixed media, usually for either pictures of yoyos or recordijg myself using them which probably sounds odd but if you take a glance at my instagram (which is on this account) youll get it.

Here's hoping someone will list that canon efm 32mm 1.4 on here lol.

The canon 32/1.4 is a fantastic lens. When I first got mine I couldn’t believe how sharp it was at 1.4.

Thats all ive heard about it, im just trying to find a good example from a private seller for it so I dont get charged a ton for any of the examples on ebay or mbp. You'd think a lense of that age on a system thats touted as "dead" would be cheaper than it is right now.

I Love this littel camera!
I just wish I'd gotten one sooner.

I've been shooting with the Gold banded USM classics primes a lot.
28mm f/1.8 USM, 85mm f/1.8 USM and 100mm f/2 USM. I also like the EF-S pancake for obvious reasons.

Actually it’s the exact opposite
I have ALL the canon M inventory and I paid nothing like what they are currently fetching.
I guess real people ( not on forums) don’t want to blow £1000+ on canons R stuff so are looking at used which is obviously forcing up the prices and many are happy to hold on to what was and still are fantastic caneras.

The M system is brilliant

I agree, Ive loved the results on both the m200 and the m6 ii.

You're 100% right on the lenses going up in price, its insane; pretty well used m32 f1.4's from canon are going for hardly 100$ under retail on every major place to get used lenses.
If you do have any spare ef m mount stuff feel free to message me and we could probably work something out. I'm definitely in the market, seeing as I only have the kit 15-45mm and a super cheap 50mm f2. manual lense.

The 22 is superb
In your shoes I’d start there 👍🏻
