Ok
I’ve now spent quite a lot of time with the R100
In general it’s ok
However firstly the almost constant nudging of the top mode dial is sending me daft. It really does need a centre lock button.

Secondly in bright sunlight I simply cannot read the exposure information in the EVF

Thirdly The rear screen really should be a touch screen

And fourthly I think canon should allow the R100 to make use of the control ring on canon lenses. That omission really was mean and dare I say unforgivable really. Using OEM canon RF lenses on canon bodies should be fully functional.

Other than that I think the R100 is great. I rarely, actually never use the R50.

I've had my R100 for about 6 months. Touch-screen would be a nice addition, but I'm not married to it. I shot a 90D since it came out until about 2 months ago. Two features I almost never used: touch-screen and video. I would like an update so I could use the built-in pop-up flash as a master flash controller. The R10 can't do that, either. I have an EL-100 that does the job. Built-in would be way more convenient.

I think the dslr equivalent of the R100 was the SL1
But that had touch screen (and sensor cleaning too)

I don’t like the articulated screens, hence why I never use the R50 plus the R100 allows me to use any of my EX flash guns (I too have a couple of EL 100- brilliant little gun)

I was in Paris last weekend. The camera was permanently on a wrist strap. Almost everytime I raised the camera I had somehow moved the top mode dial. I missed several shots. As mentioned in bright sunlight I just could not see the bottom panel for exposure - had to turn around and point camera to the floor!!

I believe the R100's sensor came from the 24MP, Rebel T7. Apparently, Canon thought it was still a good enough sensor to recycle.

The R100 is a $500 camera and pretty amazing to do what it does at that low cost.

Hmm
I don’t call $500 low cost.

It almost doesn't seem fair to criticize the R100. Everything that is "deficient" about it (according to those who think cameras should behave like smartphones) is basically addressed in the R50, so I think that is Canon's answer.

A bigger question is whether the market really needed both of these cameras.

I disable touch on all my cameras, so that at least I would not miss. But then again, all the cameras I own are large enough to have usable control points. With something the size of the R100, maybe a touch screen would be helpful, IDK.

Last week, it was $279, refurbished. I bought mine 2 years ago with the kit lens, refurbished, for $239. After I sold the lens, the cost for the camera was around $160.

Unfortunately, I don't think you are living in 2026. A good mid-grade camera is $US 3-4K+. A good cell phone is a thousand.
If you bought a smaller amount of higher grade gear it might be cheaper in the long run than having a myriad of lower grade gear. Just a thought.

I suppose if you want to participate in the madness then that’s your prerogative. I, on the other hand will decline.

Thank goodness I don’t follow the norm.

By wanting a better, newer, or different camera than the one you own (It was your decision to buy the R100), you yourself are conforming to „the norm“. 😬

Not really, while ever people pay these prices the manufacturers will carry on charging them

Fact is I could afford ANY camera these days be it a R1 or Z9 or even a Leica…but I just take snaps so the idea of blowing $3-4K (or even $10k+) isn’t the issue.

I like the R100, just like I liked the M50 and the SL1. The whole thread is what I would like if canon brought out the R100ii. Just like Nikon with the Z50/Z50ii. Canon updated the M50 to M50ii.
I think the R100 is great but I’d like the Mkii version to incorporate:-

Mode dial lock
Compactive rear screen
Ability to communicate with the RF lens function ring

Let’s keep the hot shoe native to EX speedlites

Nobody is deliberately making consumer products to constantly lose money. Denigrating photography by your usage as "snaps" has nothing to do with the development, materials and manufacturing, distribution, warranty, etc. costs.

I don't like the new hot shoes either and it is annoying that regular contacts have been removed to save a few bucks.

Canon already offers cameras that include these features.

Yes, but with flippy rear screen and the new hot shoe

I prefer a fixed compactive rear screen and EX hotshoe.

I have several bodies with the rear flippy screen - I don’t use any of them

A fixed rear screen with tempered glass protector is perfect. Why overcomplicate things??

I still have my old canon SL1 but gave away the SL2 to a work colleague (also gave away the RP too) as I just hated the rear articulated screen to the extent I flatly refused to even use the camera despite being more modern than the SL1

Same goes for my 70D, 80D, 6Dii, M50, M50ii…
Instead I reach for bodies with fixed rear screens.

I don’t think it is to save a few bucks…more like a push to force you into buying their newer flash gun.

BTW
Heads up to the 14-30PZ
Mine is now fixed almost permanently to the R100. As for lens hood.. I fitted the penny-styled washer from my RF35/1.8 via a stepping ring. Works flawlessly with no vignetting and keeps things accidentally touching the front element. I also now seem to be shooting constantly at F8 and keeping iso below 400 (usually 100) the 14-30 lens IS is so good I can hand hold at 1/8th with ease. Fantastic combo for travel and walkaround. It’s now all I carry along with a few spare batteries. The files are uploaded to my iPhone via lighting card reader I then tweak the JPEG’s and post to friends/family

So bloody simple!!

Just with I could lock that damn top mode dial!
🤣
