Turns out pros and agencies are more important than consumers to Nikon, but that has been evident for years.
I could see that sentiment towards Canon but as Bruce points out, Nikon has been very generous towards the mid-range gear in all the PF lenses from F and Z mount.

I wish the other two would push the bar like Nikon has for the TC lenses. Yeah, the price point on this latest lens is getting a bit ridiculous but I'd probably be considering it if I shot Nikon still.

Of the big three, I'd probably give Nikon the nod to prioritizing the consumers over the pros/agencies. Canon and Sony seem way more geared towards pleasing that market. Canon has just lost the plot in the past few years when making consumer products at least geared towards my interests.
I was seriously considering shooting Nikon again solely for this lens but at $14k it a no go for me... especially when you consider right now the 400TC on rebate is over $1,300 less.
That's about as apples and oranges as it gets, is it not? Isn't there an inherent monetary value to gain the full zoom range with and without the TC applied over just a prime?

True but my post was focusing more on the price positing of the 120-300TC within the Z lens lineup. I will say looking at the specs, the Z 120-300mm and the RF 100-300 are basically the same, sans the extra length and weight for the built in TC on the Nikon, with the Canon being $3,400 cheaper.

I ordered (NPS Professional Platinum priority request) it so I'll let you all know how it looks + post some sample images.

I might let go of the 400/2.8S TC or the 600/4S TC. But definitely going to sell my 800/6.3S.

I can see letting go of the 400TC (also the 70-200mm) as that is what I did with the RF 100-300. But I wouldn't sell the 600TC as that will pair really nicely with the 120-300TC.

I'm likely keeping the 70-200 since I do a lot of people/event photography + it's still probably my most used lens in motorsports since I get media access. The 600 I'm not using as often or at much at all, so that might be the one to go with the 800, honestly.

The 400 I might just keep for the 2.8. I'm pretty sure the 400 will be sharper than the 120-300 at any focal length just because the 400 is a prime. It's almost just too-tight for back-of-the-orchestra section photography I do at at times also.

Nikon is killing it by prioritizing groundbreaking lenses vs a new body every 12-24 months. Canon, I mean they have nothing for bird snappers that's worthwhile to me.

What I really love is being able to run two systems - DSLRs and mirrorless - and share lenses. My 500mm pf looked amazing on the Z8. I'm excited for the Z70.
