Canon's price + 2000-3000 USD for the built-in TC would seem normal for Nikon, so that's about $13k. Nikon doesn't want to go to a price war with Canon, and on the other hand they can't outprice the product compared to the primary competitor's offering.

This lens looks incredibly promising - but I am apparently one of the very few remaining who would prefer a fixed 300mm 2.8. Picked up the Sony 300mm 2.8 GM and its weight and size are remarkable.
If I was shooting motor sports/football perhaps, but it's becoming more and more clear this just isn't for me.
I picked up new copies of the Sony 50-150, $3,429, the Sigma 200mm F2 for $3,157.96 and a 4 month old copy of the Sony 300mm 2.8GM for $4,650. Out the door $11,236.96 for three incredibly sharp/performant lenses.
I'm all for being reckless on my lens spending, see above, but these prices are hard to swallow.

Is anyone here actually interested in buying this lens?
If I didn't buy the 400TC in 2024, I'd probably be a good candidate for this lens. I do a mix of wildlife and landscape photography with my Nikon gear, and I travel internationally two to four times a year. The 400TC is so large that I often leave it home and bring the 180-600 with me. While that might not sound like a bad deal, I like shooting between f2.8 and f4 because I do most of my wildlife photography on the edges of the day or in pretty lousy weather.
I could imagine a kit of a 24-120, 120-300TC, and 600PF. This is in contrast to my current wildlife travel bag... 24-120, 100-400, and 400TC + additional 1.4x. My kit requires a bag that can handle the diameter of the 400TC's front element. The smaller profile and diameter of the 120-300TC would allow me to carry a slightly slimmer and shorter bag. Now, if the 120-300TC is poorly balanced or approaches the mass of the 400TC, I might be less interested.
With my justifications addressed, I'll emphatically state that I'm not dissatisfied with my kit, I just might have made a different decision if the 120-300TC was available two years ago.

Good to see its about the same size as the 35 1.2
Jokes aside is this really what the Nikon faithful wanted? Another 14K Super Tele?
Certainly not for the average Nikon user, but highly professional—and consequently high-priced—super-telephoto solutions have always been part of the business and brand identity of companies like Nikon, Canon, and their peers.
These lenses are an integral part of a system like Nikon Z—and indeed help define it—even though they are designed entirely for a niche market of top-tier professional users.
However, I consider this a perfectly logical move for rounding out the lineup of professional super-telephoto solutions featuring built-in teleconverters.
With this, Nikon now offers a seamless range of super-telephoto lenses with integrated 1.4x teleconverters and is currently setting the pace in this professional super-telephoto segment.
Z 120-300/2.8 TC VR S, Z 400/2.8 TC VR S, Z 600/4 TC VR S.
For a professional sports photographer covering major events, this would be a no-brainer; otherwise, it’s rather uninteresting.
Even if the price were lower, it remains a highly specialized lens with the associated size and weight.
For the ambitious amateur and more mobile/handheld photography, a solution like the lightweight Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS would certainly be more appealing.

Far more interested in buying this lens than I am in buying any NikonRumors posts made more than 2 weeks ahead of the item being released.
But seriously, this lens looks like an absolutely perfect fit for so many applications. The prior version was a dream and this... seems a dream++.
This lens will find endless use for me. Heck, I'm not against trying it for headshot sessions, just to amuse.
I can see it lacking appeal for those more slight of build, but I'm already built for hauling. As long as it's not heavier than the 400TC, this thing is going everrrryyyywhere with me.
