I'd argue that no shutter would be less tech, not more - unlike an EVF (and IBIS). Compared to an analog M, the motorized shutter of the M11 already feels and sounds like something that doesn't belong. I'd rather have complete silence, but without the rolling shutter. That being said : why not have both?

No mechanical shutter? Slow your roll. I have a Sony for the tech. I don't want more tech in the M. Am I'm sounding like the old guy holding up progress? Maybe so.

Strange because it is quieter than the M7 shutter, maybe even that the M5.

For the M line the whole point of designing a faster sensor and processor is to make enough room in the existing M form factor for IBIS. Leica believes that if they remove the mechanical shutter they will have enough room. This means the scan speed of the sensor, and the processor speed must be fast enough to not create artifacts like rolling shutter. Ideally the camera would be global shutter without loss of dynamic range. Of course there are two ways to look at DR. If IBIS enables you to shoot at a slower shutter speed, therefore a lower ISO, it helps with DR in a given lighting condition. So a chart showing DR based on ISO will need to account for that.

Leica has partnered with a company that has history with global shutter. So many advantages with GS. But, I don't know if full GS is the current goal, or just fast stacked sensor. In any case, IBIS is the number one feature request from Leica's surveys on the M cameras. So, Leica is pursuing that direction.

That is why, "not both".

I might have missed something in this thread but what is the “ improved 60mp sensor.“?

The one used in the A7RVI that is stacked now.

That's a pseudo-stacked sensor. I'd rather they use a proper stacked sensor such as the 50MP one used in the a1, or the Nikon Z8/Z9. By proper, I mean as fast as possible.

Or since Leica likes making variants, take the old 24MP stacked Sony sensor and make a 'street' M rather than a 'landscape' M, where speed is the priority. Or heck, convince Sony to give them the global shutter sensor in the 9III, DR be damned. Then make a monochrom version as well. Since we're all just slinging wishes left, right and centre.

Even if Sony agreed to sell Leica any sensor they wanted it won't be enough. Sony won't sell their super fast proprietary processor needed to take full advantage of the super fast sensors. They won't sell the processors to anyone. Most discussions are missing this critical issue.

I’d rather have the A1 sensor, too, but as was mentioned, Sony won’t spread that butter. On the positive side, the stacked 60mp sensor is fast enough in ES mode for most of the things M cameras are used for. And with the mechanical shutter, the new sensor has a slight bump in DR as well. It’s an interim solution, hence the M11-R designation and not M12.
