I hear you on the technical upsides, but I'm actually on the other side of this one. Even if electronic ends up objectively "better" on paper, I'd hate to see the mechanical shutter go, at least not on the M. Part of what makes these cameras special to me is that they stay mechanical where it counts.

This might be a case where they could further differentiate a future M-EV with stacked sensor by removing the mechanical shutter but keep the mechanical shutter in the regular M cameras.
No mechanical shutter? Slow your roll. I have a Sony for the tech. I don't want more tech in the M. Am I'm sounding like the old guy holding up progress? Maybe so.

Honestly, I think the next body will be an M12 (or whatever they decide to call it). We have already seen all the money making variations for the M11 generation like, M11-P, M11-D, Safari, special editions, glossy paint, etc. At this point, it feels like it's either time to move on to a new generation, or they will just keep pouring R&D into the next platform for another year or two while riding out sales on what they already have....Show more →
The rumor from connected sources was that Leica wasn't going to have a new sensor ready in time for the typical new digital M launch cycle, so they were going to make an interim M11 model with the R designation that uses the improved 60mp sensor.

If they would develop a line of leaf-shutter lenses for the M (without in body focal plane shutter) ...that would be very special. Otherwise, being crippled to e-shutter only would likely mean they would need to optimize the readout for speed (unless ... ).
IF ... they went with an e-shutter and mechanical, leaf shutter lenses (undeveloped presently), I think it would be something that would be so UNIQUE to the industry, that they would be even MORE Leica-esque ... i.e. marching to their own tune, with something that NO ONE else would dare go there (enduring eternally), as the only game in niche-town for that.
