Listed as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world I had long wanted to visit Bonaventure in Savannah. It did not disappoint. According to sources it was established in 1846 on a former plantation and is described as a "quintessential Victorian "garden cemetery" with moss-draped live oaks, creating a quiet, haunting atmosphere".
It is a beautiful place and we felt a calmness overcome us as we walked through its grounds. Pictures are one thing but to stand near its statuary is an incredible experience. I imagine there are few cemeteries graced with such large and beautiful monuments. There is so much to see here and so many pictures to sort through.
Bonaventure was placed high on our itinerary for our visit to Savannah and we visited twice during our stay.
these are beautiful with rich color
this is on my bucket list
how much time (minimum) do you think is needed? Is it all by foot? (I might have a dog in the car)

Bonaventure's hours are 8am-5pm and I'd recommend be there are 8am for the best light. Give your self a couple of hours. We found the best part to be furthest away from the entry gate. They let you take your car into the grounds and they are pet friendly so you can take your dog with you.
And be sure to place Wormsloe Heritage Site on your bucket list - incredible place and very near there.

Beautiful images. I love graveyards. For me they do a lot for the bigger perspective of life. Thank you for sharing these.
Thank you, Mark. I appreciate the solitude and sense of history when I visit cemeteries and I've been doing it or a very long time. I quite enjoyed my visit to Bonaventure.
Have you ever visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana? I was there several years ago and stood at the top of Last Stand Hill from where you can see the line of white headstones where individual soldiers of the 7th died as they ran up the hill. It's easy to imagine what was going there at the time.
