https://www.nite.art/ <- Not updated as often as it needs to be, but it serves its purpose, lending legitimacy to my offer of free photography . I want to turn it into a more commercial site, but my first couple of attempts failed and I don't see yet what I could do differently to make a third attempt work.

Heh. I started hand-coding websites in 1995, but I moved to content managed sites in the early 2000s. (You still have to deal with some code if you want to customize things, of course.)

It is really weird to think that I’ve done this for a bit more than three decades!
It can be weird, great, or depressing, depending on the context. Sometimes all three at once.

I was taking pictures as a kid, long before the Internet existed. My first website used a provider called "tripod.com". I'm guessing that was sometime between 1995 and 1997. I believe you could have your own domain name and pay for hosting, or they'd host a more limited site as a subdomain of their own for "free". That's what I did. In the latter case you had to put up with pop-up ads. They were small by today's standards, but still obnoxious. Interestingly, Ethan

My initial experience with the web was a bit unusual.

At that time I was a college faculty member, and my field was electronic music. (The term “electronic music” meant something a bit different back then, but I digress…) In any case, I had used computers a lot for that purpose, as early as, well, let’s just say that my first experience was in a Defense Department funded artificial intelligence lab that was one of the nodes on the original Arpanet.)

In, I think, 1994 this thing called the world wide web was just appearing, and the Mosaic browser became available. There wasn’t a lot out there at that point, but i was intrigued. I got the browser and poked around. One day I ran into a mention of something called “MacHTTP,” which turned out to be a web server application that ran on desktop Macintosh computers. Intrigued, I downloaded it, having virtually no idea how it worked or what I’d do with it. (My office computer was one of the few at the time with access to the internet.)

I launched it and remember thinking, “What the hell! this is a web server!” I didn’t know how all of that worked, so I started “getting source” from various websites (there weren’t many, and they were primitive) and exploring it. From looking at the code I pretty quickly figured out how ot make a basic web page and serve it from… my office computer.

I started putting teaching resources online, and also taking part in various discussions about how to build web resources. In those heady days, normal (or close enough to normal) people like me could wade into some pretty cutting edge discussions. Before long I got it into my head that it could be useful for a college to have a website, so a fellow conspirator and I started mocking one up for my college. We brought it to the attention of the technology administrators at the college… who were aghast. I recall one saying that what I said I was doing — running a web site on my office computer — was not possible without access to their mainframe… and that I should knock it off.

My friend and I, understanding how campus politics works, went quiet… and continued to build the site. I mentioned it to a more visionary administrator who was very excited about it and asked us to do a public demonstration. We did, and she asked how soon it could be online, and we answered, “It already is.”

Shortly after that I came into contact with the people developing the “Manila” software and a tool called “Frontier,” which was an early web content management tool. I created one of the first online course using this along with an online community tool. Eventually I was given half-time release from teaching to work with our state education system to try to build these ideas out in the 107 campuses of the California community college system. And at about that time I became associated with an education program sponsored by Apple. (I was not an Apple employee, though I worked with folks there, including the last of their “distinguished scientists,” a posting that they eventually eliminated.)

That was a wild era. :-)

I'd probably get rid of the "search" and "browse" options, they are cluttering and serve no real use to the average visitor. Your galleries are your default way to "browse" and should be!

I would consider adding something personal beyond your photos, if only an "about" page at a minimum. If a rando were to find this site and really liked the work, they would probably want to know a little more about you. Same with a "contact" page, I've made some great connections simply from having a means for someone to reach out.

I'm sure you've poked around my site a

Nice work, Lance, with both your photos and your site!

I'm in a similar situation (your quote below). One of these days I'm hoping to come up with a clear plan for my site and be able to dedicate some serious time to putting that plan into action. Of course I've been saying that for years!

But for now, here's mine:

Why I do this I don't know because I've rarely sell anything unless I show it somewhere locally which I don't do unless it falls in my lap or someone asks for a print for a charity auction. Maybe when I retire I'll put more effort into it but monetizing would make it feel like work and less an outlet for me vs some of you make a really good living at it.

I was sticking to just basic comments above, but if you want traffic (and not everyone does — for some a site is literally just a repository), changing and updating content is pretty critical. If you want people to come back frequently, they need to expect that they'll see something new if they do.

Another important thought, assuming that you are interested in generating traffic: Make sure you are very active on social media platforms. That can take the form of sharing photographs (with some comments, perhaps, along with links back to your site), but it also requires some attention to interaction

I do have another, older Wordpress site which will go away in January of 2027. I got really sick of dealing with Wordpress and decided to go with a website builder for photographers (Portfoliobox) and that was a fantastic option for what I want out of the site. It is a little more expensive, but not having to deal with all of the back-end stuff makes it totally worth it for me. The switch also gave me a nice opportunity to re-consider the site structure and content.

I do have a blog on my new site as well, but rarely ever post to it. A few entries were ported over from my old site. Blogging is definitely not the main goal, but nice to have when I feel like adding a post.

I do have another, older Wordpress site which will go away in January of 2027. I got really sick of dealing with Wordpress

My Site is purely html code-based.
iPower hosted it for some 30 years but they have recently been taken-over in rapid succession by, first, iPage, followed by NetwareSolutions.

I did have a bit of difficulty hooking up both Dreamweaver and FileZilla to the new system at first but that is now fixed.
NS provides unlimited storage space and I believe that they are geared to host both Wordpress and other template based websites.

My website, which is best explored on a computer rather then by iPhone because it uses Juice-box Pro Galleries, is:
https://shelbourne-america.net

The site includes images shot all over the world during the past 60 years. The older photographs were shot on Ektacolor film while the later shots are from Nikon digital cameras.
Enjoy!

My website is www.sungparkphotography.com and IG is Sung.photo

I found that I preferred Squarespace because of their templates after bouncing between that and Format. I use the website as a portfolio for commercial and headshot clients, and am pretty active on Instagram.

I started using Pixieset about a year or so ago. $16/month and easy editing. I like the overall look of the site but I don't like that I can't make the images clickable to enlarge or shrink to fit the images to the page. I also would like to have captioning for my photos but these options aren't available at least in my plan. It would be nice to tell the story about each photo too. Pixieset is really made for photographers that are shooting sessions and want to post galleries of photos for their clients to see and then if lucky, buy prints. I'm not using it in that sense. I like how the viewer gets to scroll through my photos at page width which makes the photos more impactful as they are revealed. Or at least that's what I think. ;-)
