The L-mount lens family has expanded. Panasonic has introduced the compact LUMIX S 40mm F2 (S-S40), a prime lens that's a perfect match for compact cameras like the Lumix S9. It's just over 40mm long and weighs 144 grams. The filter diameter is 62mm. In addition to the classic black finish, the LUMIX S 40mm F2 will also be available in silver. The new lens will retail for around $400.
The optical design is relatively simple, with seven elements in six groups. However, three aspherical lens elements are used. This could theoretically result in less-than-ideal bokeh with "onion rings" and other irregularities. The lens has a seven-blade aperture. The minimum focusing distance is 30cm. Minimized focusing breathing is also mentioned for video enthusiasts.
The lens barrel features a programmable button and an autofocus switch. The manual focus ring's function can be changed in the camera menu. It is dust- and moisture-resistant, with a minimum operating temperature of -10 degrees Celsius.
