I'm thinking the Skopar will have the advantage over both the Ultron and the Nokton so far as spherochromatism goes, since neither are completely free of the issue (depending on the lighting/background/focus distance, of course) until f/5.6. If the APO lens doesn't beat that, I'll be surprised. Other objective or subjective measures, I think, will be a different story. I think the big stand-out story will be a balance of size and performance, just like it is with the AS 90.

I believe if you find Juha's sample photos from CP+ you can get a fairly decent idea how it will compare to the two other VM 75s for LoCA/fringing. IIRC, it's better than the 75/1.5, but not as well corrected as the 90/4 APO Lanthar.

I have it in hand, and my first impression was just how small this 75mm lens is, possibly the smallest ever made for the M-mount. The addition of a focusing tab is also quite unusual for a short telephoto and it rotates so smoothly.

Being an APO design, it's impressive that pushing size this far doesn't suggest any major compromises in aberration correction at least on paper. I'm curious to see how it performs in real use.

And resolution and contrast are already optimal at f/2.8 from center to extreme corner…. I will start the review in another thread.

BTW, it looks like Cameraquest is taking pre-orders for the Voigtlander 75mm f/2.8 APO (no link affiliation).

Looked at the CQ pre-order page, what a sweet compact lens! One of the photos shows one mounted to a MP TA-1 body. What the heck is that?

It appears to be a custom hybrid of the Leica M2 and Leica M3, made for Canadian photographer Tom Abrahamsson. I don't believe it was assembled by Leica, though I could be mistaken.

In case anyone is curious, it will be selling for $699. Pretty much exactly what I expected.

I look forward to seeing how it does on a Sony sensor. Not sure I want to shoot 75mm on a rangefinder, but I love the images from the 65 APO on Sony, but not so much the size of the lens.

The optical construction seems very different from the 65 APO.

https://www.cosina.co.jp/voigtlander/VM-mount/APO-SKOPAR-75mm-f2.8/

Imo, the construction in front of the aperture reminds me of the 75/1.5 Vintage and 50/1.5 Vintage ... but, with APD elements used more. Which is similar also in construction to the 90/2 Ultron APO (again, with more APD elements).

That then, combined with a lens construction behind the aperture more like the 50/2.2 Skopar or 50/3.5 APO.

With that in mind, I think it'll be "more APO" than the Vintage series, but "less APO" than the 65 E-Series, sitting in a space of being well corrected without the use of ASPH elements.

I liked the Vintage 75/1.5 on the rangefinder just fine ... but, I did NOT like the focus shift of that lens for rangefinder use. Hopefully, the new Voigt has minimal focus shift with the APD elements.
