I proposed this as a solution a while ago, it would allow them to create this camera without tying it to the highest-res lineage of the Z7 line.
I would hope they would re-organize the back of this camera should it ever come to exist, with the more modern button layout, but then we are right back to it being a non-bin-part camera.
Better yet, create yet a new camera in a rangefinder style, and release both a 24 and 45 megapixel variant ala Sony!

Frankly, I continue to think that if we do see a new 45MP non-stacked camera from Nikon, it will be the Zfx, not a Z7III

Would it be nice if there was a Z7 III? Yep.
Am I unable to make literally any image I desire because of the absence of it? No.
In general, I do wish Nikon would be a little more forthcoming with roadmaps, but it's not stopping me from doing my best work and it shouldn't stop you either.
Their roadmap is a new CEO and to try and get back to being profitable by 2029 !! In the meantime I wouldn't be holding my breath for a Z7iii.

Eh? Nikon hasn’t posted a loss since FY2021, although their posted profit reported in May 2025 for FY2025 was very small. While we don’t have the numbers for FY2026 (year end is March 31, 2026) as those won’t be released until May, their q1-q3 2025 results were all profitable.

I just got a Z7ll to accompany a Z9...it's a pretty remarkable camera. I guess I don't vibe with the obsession with always wanting more and better when what I have works fine. If I made a living with my gear...then yeah...I do get it.
The Z7 II has a better sensor for IQ. It doesn't suffer from the "hurry up" compromise the 2021 stackables have. Everyone expects that to not be such a problem in the future.
