Purchased an OM1 about 30 months ago which purportedly had a 3 year guarantee from the supplier (not OM System). Decided to sell the body to a retailer who on examination indicated that the sensor was delaminating. I had not observed the sensor condition as it had never been touched since purchase and images showed no problems. The exterior body was mint. The supplier requested I send the body to their repair company. The outcome was that the supplier indicated that the repair company concluded that the sensor had been damaged by some fluid and therefore they were not responsible for the repair. The response is equivalent to those who complain of lens problems only to be told its knock damage. It would appear that third party guarantees have zero worth. A word of warning to those who purchase from suppliers providing their own guarantees.
I only buy extended warranties from the manufacturer. But some like Nikon are often worthless. They often state there is impact damage although there obviously was none. Been there, done that. Hopefully OM is better.
No issue with OM extended warranty on my Original OM-1. Had sensor problem with dark spots showing on pic if I stopped down lens. Sensor was replaced under extended warranty.
I had an issue with a Canon warranty. After a few days of use, I noticed there was an oil spot on my sensor. I sent it to Canon thinking it was a warranty issue since I hadn't touched that sensor and my lenses were new RF lenses, but they insisted I had to pay for their cleaning service. I never found out what the cause of that oil spot was.
OM isn't so hot with this sensor issue either in my experience and quite a few others on DP Review that have experienced the same sensor degradation. OM keeps saying they have never heard of it...some folks need to hear things more than once or twice (5 times) to remember I guess.
I dumped my Olympus stuff at the time...though thinking of getting an OM-1 II. Recently got an X quite cheap and inexpensive f1.8 primes of 17 II, 25II and 45 variety all new.
