I’ve done enough birds that I know 800 is the answer for me, so I would go with the 400-800 plus 1.4x. I’m leaning toward the Tammy for the compact size and added versatility and it eliminating the needs for the 70-200/4 and 100-40/4.5. In turn that saves me around $4500 net which basically pays for another body 🤷🏼

My copy of the 50-400 is working well for me. Here is a 100% pixel crop on the A7R6 at 400mm wide open at f/6.3 (developed in LR as I always do), equivalent on my monitor to looking close up at a 38” print.

Two reviews I found accurate to what I’ve seen in the 1.5 years I’ve been shooting mine (as well as another copy on Nikon):

YMMV.

I do too! I think many times lens opinions vary based on copy variation. My 50-400 was close enough to the sharpness of a really great copy of the Sony 100-400/4.5-5.6 (Fred Miranda’s former lens) that I sold the latter because I prefer the versatility of going down to 50mm. But that Sony lens took the 1.4x exceptionally well and I would have kept it if 560mm f/8 was more important to me.

You may know of the landscape photographer Mads Peter Iversen, the 50-400 has been his main tele zoom the last couple years.

I 100% get that -- I actually considered the version 1 100-400 Sony lens for the reason of being smaller than the new one and taking the TC, but in the end I decided to at least try the Tammy for it's added versatility. If I don't like it, it will go back, but I'm hoping it becomes a regular in my bag.
