Red-rumped Parrots A7R6 300 f/2.8

Cropped to 6K (slightly smaller than APS-C size)

Cloudy and dark conditions so wasn't expecting much but the subject detection and AF is top notch. Also no issues with rolling shutter despite these bird being very quick.

It’s interesting that it originally locked onto the yellow bird, but lost that bird when the other bird flew by. Is there a setting to have it keep focus onto the original bird. I’m thinking more street photography where people walk in front of the main subject quite often.

Thanks for the link. A really nice writeup. I am still struggling whether I should replace one of my two A1IIs with an A7RVI. G.A.S. is affecting my brain.

I started with two A1 II's, then replaced one of them with the A7R5. I was never completely settled with that change. I just replaced my A7R5 with the A7R6. Now, I feel very satisfied with the combination and am quite satisfied with my new kit.

For me, when shooting dual cameras, the difference in controls on differing cameras interferes with my "muscle memory" when making rapid field adjustments. Fortunately, I do a lot less shooting of dual camera's than I did a couple years ago, so it is no longer an issue, for me.

The battery life on the R6 is absolutely amazing and I really like those extra MP when using long lenses with a lot of cropping. I have also gained back a stop of dynamic range that I gave-up when I sold my medium format cameras. I also really appreciate the new EVF. I know there are a lot of critics on this forum regarding the R6, but I find the camera to be absolutely amazing.

Quite frankly, the main reasons I do not convert my remaining A1 II to an A7RVI is the 120fps focus tracking for really fast action, silent shutter with flash (and 1/400 synch speed capability) and the very occasional need for the 4ms sensor readout speed.

These are all practical reasons - unrelated to GAS.

The AF Level For Crossing option allows you to tell the camera how long it
should stick with the first subject before it tries for a new lock - again -
when there is a significant change in focus distance under the AF area.

Thank you for posting. I was not aware of these changes on Sony's newer cameras.

Does anyone know if Sony is using a new type of compression technology/method? Or they just dropped uncompressed raw and reorganized and renamed the remaining lossless and lossy compression types.

Bump. Just in case someone with information may have missed this request of a few days back.

Ok, that makes sense. duncangr , what was this parameter set to.

As a side, does anyone have experience with the A7r6 shooting street when people or objects cross in front of your focussed subject. Just wondering how sticky the focus system is on the subject that was originally in focus.

I guess that will depend on size and speed of the interfering object and whether you are using subject detection or not. Let's say you're across the street and want to make a photo of a man looking in the window of a shop...if you're using human subject detection then the focus should remain/jump back to the man when the obstruction (car/truck) etc. passes. If it doesn't then you will need to change the AF crossing level to a more sticky setting since the object is larger and moving slower probably. It's been hotter than 40 hells here recently but someone close to a streetscape should test it....

Thank you for chiming in, Jeff. Now you are getting me in trouble. I know for sure, from reviews, the A7RVI will show rolling shutter effect for certain subjects or in certain conditions (such as tree, buildings) during panning. I guess I just don't use it for hummingbirds and propeller planes. I can always fall back to the A1II if needed. I will probably get one when the price drops to $4000, which won't be long.

I’m more concerned about other humans crossing in front of the subject. Is there settings to make the focus stick to the original person once the obstruction clears.

It would still be af level for crossing and a maybe a change in that menu for "locked on"....there is also a sub setting under subject recognition/human for changing the tracking shift range from 1 to 5 with 5 being the best for recognition of the human body...are there any sports shooters here that would share their A1 II settings for sports/humans?

I keep the default settings - you are being a little unrealistic if you expect any camera to not switch subjects in the situation shown above. These birds are a bit smaller than a budgerigar - incredibly quick and nearly collided with each other - so very close together. No chance that settings will change the outcome and the male bird was prettier anyway

Check my YouTube videos of the jackals - with all the birds in the foreground around its head. Default settings.

It might be more realist to think those settings might work in a sports type scenario - but tiny birds within inches of each other - not so much.

EDIT: Yes there is a setting, same options as the A1ii and A9iii.

Just set up FTP transfer today. I love it and speeds are great with my setup. The RAW files flow w/out any issue. The convenience is there. Just shoot and pics are waiting for ya.
