Most small electronic products operate from 100-240VAC and you can buy generic power cords or adapters. They generally fall under IEC 60320, so you can use many US photo/small electronics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60320#Appliance_couplers

Warranties vary by manufacturer and product type, but usually only apply in the region of distribution. Back in the States EU products may be considered grey market and not covered.

Where in Italy are you moving to. I moved from California to Parma this year. The cord and power issues are easy to deal with. Leica warranties are Global so no issues there. Others depend on Company policies.

What Items are you concerned about?

We are trying to move to the tuscany region...One of the smaller cities though with less issues with crowds..Maybe Pistoia. Our realtor just suggested that....

Where in California did you live? I grew up in the SF valley!

We came from La Jolla, California to Parma. We still have our house in La Jolla, and are also looking to buy one at the coast, probably Rapallo, or Santa Margarita.

Pistola is nicely situated to some good major cities, so it's small size should not be an issue. My preference is to always rent for a while so I can learn the market in detail. Small delineations of neighborhood can have a big impact on lifestyle issues and values. I tend to not buy property based on recommendations from realtors as the whole structure of the real estate sales industry violates the concept of fiduciary, "having the best interest of the client". This is true on both the buyer and seller side. I came to this opinion after having bought and sold thousands of houses and properties in my life as an investor.

Italy is particularly bad in this regard. Especially financially. The transaction fees/taxes/expenses put a heavy load on a purchase. Properties do not appreciate much, velocity and liquidity are low, bureaucracy is high. Italian property should be viewed as a consumer item. An expense. Not an investment. Be conservative and rent for enough time to fully understand the market and issues involved. Understand that when all is said and done you will be 25% to 30% upside down on a property the day you take possession. THis is sometimes mitigated in locations that have a very late foreign driven market like some resort cities, and international financial hubs like Milan. Small towns are notoriously bad in this regard. It is a very different experience living in Italy rather than visiting Italy. I absolutely would not do the living here thing if it were not driven by other business requirements. This, and I am actually a dual citizen of Italy and the U.S..

It sounds like you will be locating within two hours of me. It would be easy for us to get together during one of you trips here. I am happy to share my experiences, and knowledge gained. Electronics will be an easy thing to solve. Adapters will make most things work here. T.Vs will not. Feel free to PM me and we will share direct contact information.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the advice. We are definitely renting first. I have been looking at properties, but see how long they have been listed and also watching the prices drop. And drop and drop. We figured that if we did buy, it was not going to be easy to sell. So, we are going to rent.

We are listing our house in Castle Rock, Colorado on May 1st and hopefully it sells relatively quickly. WE thought about renting it, and applying for an ERV, but that comes with other issues. So, we are doing the IRV instead. Neither of us have Italian ancestors. I have a grand mother from England, but I am not interested in the UK.

Regard ,

Jon

My cameras are US models and I live in Italy, the chargers feature the foldable plug for US outlets, just swap that for a EU cord and you are set, the chargers work both 110V AC 60Hz and 230V AC 50Hz

If you come my way you are welcome to borrow some of my gear

Ciao Giovanni,
Io e mia moglie adoriamo Capri e ci andiamo spesso d'estate.

My understanding is Nikon USA will service them as long as I can provide a receipt showing the item was purchased from an authorized Nikon dealer. They are not viewed as "gray market", which are Nikon products imported by a third party into to US for retail sale.

Would the same rules apply to other countries like Japan? Meaning, gear bought in the USA, but then someone moved to Japan or other parts of Asia?
