p.1 #1 · Buying advice request: Sony 50-150 or 70-200 f2.8?

Hello, this is another advice request picking between the two.. Want to pick some brains in the forum to go through my thought process..
Tried reading some of the threads here, and what I get from them seems to be.. they're two different lenses..

(jump to end to skip rant)

  1. Current equipment
I currently have a7iii and a7c. For a long time, I've been shooting with my 24-105/4 (and recently 24-70/2.8) and A-mount 70-200. I've used my lenses in various situations, and the most common ended up going to conventions and taking photos of event floor and cosplayers, and local music events and taking photos of performers.

  2. Reason I'm interested
Now, I didn't understand the need at first for 50-150, but after being taken photo of with it at the Sony Creative Space photo booth, I realized what's the purpose of the lens. I had a 50/1.7 before, a 85/1.8 I frequently carry for a light setup, and an A-mount 135/1.8 that sees irregular use over the years for reasons everyone would expect - not the first choice in unexpected/unprepared setting. So I can see myself carrying the 50-150/2 a lot. Other than holding the lens at the Creative Space though, I haven't had chance to play around much with it (because the cable holding the lens was pretty short, and it was available only at the display space, not the test space). I also have 135 STF and 90mm macro, both which I also love to use, though for nature rather than portraits, so I do play around in this range a lot.

  3. Comparing to old equipment
Weight wise, I'm used to carry my 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 A-mount together. I love the image quality, angle of view, and subject separation of my 70-200, but 70 can be too far for tight spaces where there's many cosplayers huddled together.

My A-mount 70-200/2.8 is around 15 years old, and I couldn't get myself to justify getting an E-mount 70-200/2.8 because.. the old one just still works (albeit sometimes the aperture blades get sticky and often refuse to work at smaller apertures, but I use it more often in indoors/low lighting anyway). So this is more of a 'want' than a 'need' purchase. I don't use the higher end as much due lack of OSS either, and even if I do, I usually have it handheld so light motion blur is pretty prevalent in my photos at 150mm+

  4. Budgeting
I'm purely a hobbyist, and I'm less concerned about the budget on this choice. I'm more looking into the fun factor than technical. I'm biased towards the 50-150, but it's likely temporary gear lust too coming back from the Creative Space.. But hobby is hobby, right? I'm aware of the lack of TC compatibility, but I also haven't used any TC with my A-mount 70-200 because I always prefer light setup for mobile usage. I rarely do sports, and for indoor activities, I usually don't do super crowded events so I have the freedom to move around usually.

tl;dr should I get the 50-150/2 because I like taking photos of people and events, or should I switch from my A-mount 70-200 to E-mount because it'll be lighter and more general purpose, and a decade+ native mount update to my lens?

Also not a main concern, but do you think 50-150 will have low resale value due to uncommon need? (My A-mount lenses resale value crashed anyway, so I don't really treat lenses as a returnable investment value)

If your primary purpose is to shoot events, have you looked at the Tamron 35-150? I shoot 4-5 non-profit events per year, and used to carry a 24-70 in addition to the 70-200 with two bodies. With the Tamron, I can just use one body. You’re not on a high FPS body, and shooting relatively static subjects, so the Tamron might do the trick for you.

I did look into the 50-150, but the starting focal length of 50mm was a no-go for tight spaces for me personally.

Of those two choices, the clear winner is the 50-150. It is an absolutely extraordinary lens and experience. I also can't ever see the value going down, as there will be low supply and people are absolutely interested in it. It is not an uncommon need. It is near 70-200, and goes to f2, which makes a massive difference. I sold my 70-200 after buying it. I am a hobbyist.

Only have experience with the 70-200 f2.8 II. Which is exceptional. But for your use case. 70mm might be too long in crowded event spaces. The extra 20mm would come in handy with the 50-150

But I like Newenglandrocks suggestion of the Tamron 35-150. Maybe not quite as glamorous as the 50-150. But a heck of a cheaper. And should focus better than your A-mount 70-200 because it’s native E-mount

I have never owned the Tamron, but seems to be held in pretty high regard. Good luck in your decision!

I would choose 70-200 for its longer reach (along with TCs) or 50-150 for speed and bokeh.

If you need a lens or lens combo in the 50-150 range I can't think of a better way to do it. After renting the lens I am currently planning to sell my 70-200ii and 85 1.4 so I can buy it. For indoor sports the focal range is perfect. F/2 spoils you pretty quickly.

I own both the 50-150 and the 70-200 GM II.

When I am photographing people, I use the 50-150 exclusively. It's extraordinarily sharp, even wide open at f/2, and the range is ideal - shooting full-length using 50mm, and candids at a distance with 150mm.

Using f/2 to pick out one face in a crowd can be rather fun!

It is not a cheap lens, but I have enjoyed it ever since it arrived.

I haven't reached the point of deciding to sell the 70-200, but I'm thinking about it.

On the subject of the Tamron 35-150, do bear in mind that that lens stops being f/2 before it gets to 50mm, and is f/2.8 for a lot of its range. The 50-150 is f/2 all the way. And the despite the difference in size, the difference in weight is surprisingly small: 1165g for the Tamron, and 1340g for the Sony.

Another vote for 50-150 f2, I sold my 70-200 GMii to fund the 50-150 and have never regretted it. It’s a bit heavier but a joy to use for family gatherings and vacations. I wish it could take TC’s but it is what it is. I’m also a hobbyist, and enjoy taking photos and documenting life.

I’m in love with my 50-150 for people and dog portraits. It’s really not that heavy considering what it is - it IS big, but when shooting dogs I often shoot one handed. I wouldn’t let the weight put you off.

The 50-150 f/2 use cases seem quite limited to me. Indoor, large venue events would seem to be one of those few legitimate situations. So that might make sense for you. However . . . I still feel like most people would be better served by a Sony 70-200 f/2.8 + 1.4x TC along with Viltrox or Samyang 50 f/1.4 and 135 f/1.8. That entire 3-1/2 lens kit can be put together new or used for less than the price of the 50-150 alone.

I would look into the Tamron 35-150. It's a great deal used (almost 1/3 of the price of the 50-150) and personally, having a 35 @f2 is amazing. While the 50-150 is only slightly heavier on paper, it's significantly larger in volume and it's also WHITE. Just something to keep in mind.

Rent both and buy the one you like!

I love the 50-150 I think it is the best/most versatile lens on any platform. I use it for events and it's so sharp that even if I need to crop in to 200mm it is no issue. I also find that I really like the 50mm end of this lens. It also has great contrast and sharpness. I often feel with a 70-200 that for events, the 70 is not wide enough. You can crop a 150 to 200 but you can't crop 70nmm to 50.

Thank you for all the inputs! They're exactly what I was looking for.

I love how everyone shared their use cases. I'm a bit surprised at how many 50-150 personal feedbacks are there.

I can see despite how timeless is the 70-200, photographers are still falling in love with the 50-150. And that everyone has their own different focus on what they want out of their photos.

I will rent the Tamron 35-150 to check it out too, the all-in-one event lens solution definitely interest me, as much as I've gotten to carry my heavy setup

It sure is a luxurious problem eh? Choosing between all these lenses that can serve our purpose, just each one having their own cherry on top

"It's tough out there" as my wife would say
The 50-150 has that special sauce, but it's heavy and doesn't have TC compatibility. The 70-200II is amazing and I really love mine, but it's maybe not as exciting. The 35-150 is a great lens, but not a Sony which could be an issue for some. We are spoiled by choice and that makes it tough!

Late to the party, but I'd choose the 50-150 over the 70-200 GM II for your use case, I have both lenses as well. Never shot the Tamron 35-150, but I've seen great work from it.

Coming from another "not a pro" user.

I couldn't disagree more. I use the 50-150 constantly. It has a million use cases, at least as a hobbyist lens. It completely replaces the 70-200 unless you absolutely need tc use.

Yeah, I keep my 50-150GM on my body and it’s been about 90% of my shots. I love the pictures I get from it fortuitously just by having it on ready to go. I don’t really mind the weight at all, and honestly for my eyes the Tamron 35-150 doesn’t have the same pop, kinda tired of people bringing up that lens every time the GM is mentioned.

You are certainly allowed to disagree. However, you are required to provide evidence to back up your claim. I already provided the first item for your list of uses. I will eagerly await the remaining 999,999 use cases for the 50-150 f2. Remember to include an image with each one.

A gallery with providence of illegitimate use cases for the 50-150, provided as evidentiary proof.

I think shadow9d9 was using what is commonly called hyperbole. (Not intended to be taken literally.)

I haven't used my 70-200 GM II (with or without TC) much if at all since getting the 50-150. At the end of the day though, preferences will be personal whether it's the 70-200 GM II (with or without TCs), the 50-150, the 35-150....some mix of other lenses, etc. I'm just not sure anyone has to prove anything, to anyone, when it comes to preferences.

B&H prices as of 3/24/2026 (choosing the cheapest of the options I believe you were proposing)

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens - $3,148 (or were you thinking the original GM?)
Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 FE Lens - $549
Samyang AF 135mm f/1.8 FE Lens - $599 (currently $200 off)

Total - $4298

Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens - $3948 (currently a $50 rebate when registering)

Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter - $598 (was that the half? I left that out of the comparison)

Where am I going wrong here?
