I didn't see it mentioned in the description, but is this version black paint on aluminum?

Good question. Sorry I can't find any more detailed information even with the product # at the Leica site🤷‍♂️

'Yes, the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH. in Glossy Black Paint features a glossy black paint finish over an aluminum lens barrel. It is marketed as a premium, glossy paint version and should not be confused with the standard, lighter black anodized brass finish.'

Hope this helps. Despite their massive problems right now, AI works as a truly refined giant search engine.

“ should not be confused with the standard, lighter black anodized brass finish.'

Goes to show how AI should not be trusted - it is the one that is confused : brass lighter ? standard black lens is anodised aluminium.

Wonder how LLL sales of their 50/1.2 1966 has impacted Leicas efforts to sell their 50/1.2 models regardless of paint at prices many multiples over the LLL lens?

Probably has, the LLL is more authentic with its glass and hand ground lens, and much cheaper, although out of production at LLL there are still some new ones to be had which I guess shows the market is saturated, everyone including me, who wants one and has one. I like my LLL and did not consider buying the Leica one perhaps because of it, Leica did ok with me, I have a 0.95 and I have not ruled the 35/1.2 just not rushing into it. So I would hazard a guess Leica made more glossy blacks than they expect they can sell in near term so they did a "we are almost giving them sale" at still 3X+ of the LLL. There are a few photographers who tell of having a noct of some sort glued to their camera, but most of us, the noct comes on and off and are lens for occasion so the LLL works just fine when I want that look. Both the Leica and LLL are after all "replicas" there are the originals out there....... 30K$+ solving the replica issue.

Leica just raised prices on everything, but this one lens. curious....

There has been a parallel discussion thread here of Leica terminating the safari M11P and then offering green lenses but no green camera. Curious business model, their thinking would be a most interesting youtube, never happen, but it would be interesting.

Likely the answer is yes, but it might not be the only reason. I think it is the FL itself with many alternative fast lens options in the 50 mm range these days including Voigtlander. It takes a lot of conviction to put $$$$ down for such lens if something similar for much cheaper effectively provides a very similar image in the end.

p.1 #10 · Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH. $1000 off B&H

This lower price did prompt me to stop, and think, seriously. $8K US would be at the extreme high end of achievable, without having to pay interest to a credit card company. I would, however, have to rearrange some financial priorities, in somewhat-painful ways. Then, realizing that the shiny black paint finish would not wear, to show brass, as would be inevitable, as the hood was repeatedly affixed and dismounted, became a factor. My Leica cameras are black chrome, which would not match the lens. It would make more sense to acquire a pre-owned black chrome Re-Edition Noctilux f/1.2, which would match my general pattern of buying well-preserved, pre-owned M lenses, starting with my first M-mount lens acquisition, my beloved Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, 11891.

I am, thus far, fiercely devoted to my Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, 11891, acquired in April 2018. There are others like it, but this one is mine. This lens may have saved my desire to continue to photograph people, or, perhaps, to continue to photograph anything, at all, after seven-plus years of photographing evidence of human inhumanity to fellow humans. (Evidentiary/forensic/crime scene photography, with an emphasis on living, breathing, traumatized victims, at “action macro” range.) I have added other 50mm M lenses, but, each has had to “plead its case,” as it were.

Then, there is the elephant in my next room, mere steps away, my Cosina Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.0 Asherical VM, with an external aesthetic appearance not unlike the 1966 Noctilux, and optics not unlike a more modern Noctilux, though its visual signature stands on its own.

There, I think that I just “talked myself out” of buying a marked-down black paint Noctilux 50/1.2.

Not sure if it helps but I am even fine with my first Leica lens I bought used in 2014 - the 50/2.0 Summicron-M Version V. To date, it remains one of the sharpest lenses with good contrast even wide open I currently have. If I want to go faster - either for low light, DoF needs in a specific scenery - I grab either my Canon 50/1.2 LTM or my Nikkor 50/1.4 S.C. LTM lens. Both LTM lenses can be purchased for < $500 and provide me with a great bokeh and some vintage lens effects (like vignetting) I prefer to see in this kind of compositions. Therefore I don't even see me using a 50 mm Summilux lens. It would be redundant for me at this point. This is said from a purely user specific POV - I am not a collector of less common or too expensive lenses.

I agree the LLL version is actually the better choice if you're after the look of the original Leica. It’s also closer to the original in terms of barrel design, and Light Lens Lab's silver chrome version is made of brass while still coming in at a reasonable weight of around 545g. The Leica glossy black paint, on the other hand, raises longevity concerns, as not everyone likes the aluminum showing through over time. Many prefer a heavier body that wears more gracefully through patina, which could be one reason Leica is having a harder time moving this lens at its original price.

If the black paint on brass look is your holy grail, the 11713 Summilux now offers that at half the Noctilux price... if one is okay with the way it's rendering transitions between modern and deeply flawed

Completely different rendering, but yes, the 11713 is absolutely gorgeous. I have often considered trading my Leica 50/1.4 Lux ASPH + 50/1.4 Lux pre-ASPH for it, but my pre-ASPH v3 black is so light at 275 g including the built-in hood, compared to the reissue at 417 g plus its 80 g brass hood...almost twice as heavy with the hoods attached.

I also prefer the rendering of the original pre-ASPH over the new reissue.

I cannot lie, this Noctilux looks pretty sweet for a modern lens from Leica AG. The focus throw and DOF scale are actually halfway decent, and everyone loves a scalloped ring, right? The original chrome 50/1.2 which I've seen at auction is completely out of sight price-wise—and also unobtainable. Sadly for Leica, I already own the 'lux 50 v2 circa 1961. They don't make these anymore:

I don’t really understand pricing structure, but bringing the price closer in line with the 35 Summilux seems like a smart move.

I'd rather have the 1.4 lux. So don't listen to me.
