p.1 #1 · Very fast American Oystercatchers in flight
I've been photographing American Oystercatchers for years and have always realized that they are fast yet never checked till yesterday and discovered that they fly at 90 MPH (145 KPH). These flight photos taken at Nickerson Beach on Long island are at varying distances with most in the 15 to 20 ft. (4.5m to 6m) range. Now that I know how fast they are and I experience how maneuverable, I realize why I sometimes struggle to keep this Peregrine Falcon sized bird in frame. I find this challenge worthwhile as you are about to see.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
Morris

Karl
Thank you Karl,
I missed most of the OC mating season last year due to tennis elbow making it extra special for me this year.

Great job, Morris. Even at 100 feet these guys are quick, but at 20 feet? Woof.
Thank you Bob,
I've realized i'm basically photographing a fast ball after it leaves the pitchers hand yet oystercatchers change directions much more than any pitch.

Thank you Greg,
My reaction time is down from my younger years yet I'm making up for this with subject knowledge giving me the ability to anticipate there action.

You've captured some really amazing action here Morris. I'm used to seeing images of oyster catchers on black Rocky shorelines. Your choice bright golden sand really makes the images pop!
