p.1 #1 · DIY Pentax 67 Arca Grip Mod

Discussion in the other P67 thread started by @corposant@@ led me to the idea to add an arca plate to the left side P67 grip in order to provide a better option for shooting in portrait on a tripod. I decided to fabricate a replacement for the entire wooden assembly rather than mess with the original one.

My mottos for DIY are "work with what you've got" and "good enough is good enough". I'm sure a more refined version is possible. For instance you could remove the original metal end caps and re-use them with a new, more precisely made wooden piece.

I spent $12 for the wood (I have enough left over for 4 more) and black screws, and the arca plate cost $25 on eBay. I already had all the other supplies/tools lying around.

The new grip is still great for hand carry at my side, but it's too thick now for it to be comfortably used at eye level (which I never did anyway). The arca plate I got is pretty massive, but it's rock solid and I figure the bit of extra height makes it easier to mount in the clamp.

Wood is finish grade Poplar from the local home improvement store. Rough shaping of the wood was with a hole saw (for the ends) and an oscillating tool. Final shaping was with a pocket knife and sandpaper. Stained black and finished with spray gloss clear coat.

Cut the head off a 1/4-20 machine screw and glued it into the hole from the hole saw on one end to provide a mounting point for the cold shoe.

Shimmed the mounting bands with pieces cut off large duct/hose clamps.

It was a fun little project and I'm looking forward to using it!
